About the role:

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Child Wellbeing Case Worker (internally known as ‘Social Worker’) will work collaboratively with families, other professionals, and the Norfolk Island community to strengthen the safety and wellbeing of children, young people, and their families.

The successful candidate will work across the service delivery continuum, providing early intervention services and targeted support for vulnerable families who are at risk of entering or re-entering the child protection system and statutory child protection services.

Key responsibilities:

  • Contribute to building a robust and integrated child and family service system on Norfolk Island.
  • Using a community engagement/development approach, plan and deliver information/education, and early intervention and prevention initiatives aimed at supporting families in raising safe, happy, and healthy children and young people who are meeting their full potential.
  • Undertake delegated functions under the Child Welfare Act 2009 (NI) including receiving, investigating, and assessing child protection concerns about harm to children and young people.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and partnerships with community members and other agencies in a unique community which has experienced significant political and governance changes and has a complex socio-political and cultural environment.

This role is based on Norfolk Island, a remote island in the South Pacific, and may involve travel to Australia, including overnight stays away. This is a 12-month contract position, working 3 to 5 days per week (to be discussed at interview stage).

About you:

  • Must possess a full current Australian driver licence and be prepared to obtain a Norfolk Island driver licence.
  • Must hold a recognised Social Work qualification, if social work qualification is from overseas then proof of validation by the AASW required.
  • Post-qualification experience in child and family social work, with a child protection focus.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in the assessment and delivering of evidence-based interventions and programs with individuals, groups, families, organisations, communities, and other social systems.
  • Ability to tailor responses to a unique socio-cultural and remote community.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, relationship building, organisational and written skills.
  • Tenacious, diligent, and resilient with the ability to adopt a creative approach to problem solving.
