  • Reports to: Chair of the Board
  • Remuneration: Honorary position (unpaid). Expenses related to the role will be reimbursed if approved in advance.
  • Term: Three-year term, renewable for up to two terms. A third term may be granted by the Board if needed.
  • Time commitment: Minimum of six board meetings a year, with a mix of in-person and video conference, with additional meetings as required. One full day face-to-face planning day with staff, Members Council and guests. Directors are also expected to participate in subcommittees and events.

Landcare Tasmania is the peak body that represents, supports, strengthens and grows the community Landcare movement in Tasmania. It is the oldest State-based Landcare organisation in Australia with more than 300 member groups, plus individual and associate members; supporting over 6,000 volunteers to maintain and improve the health of Tasmania’s natural and working landscapes.

Landcare Tasmania is a not-for-profit, non-government organisation and registered charity. We work closely with the community, government bodies, businesses, educational institutions and other environmental organisations to achieve environmental and sustainability outcomes for Tasmania. We have a small but passionate team of staff based mainly in Hobart. We value our high ethical standards and personal integrity among employees. ABOUT THE ROLE

Landcare Tasmania is seeking two voluntary board members to help guide the growth and strategic direction of our organisation, which supports communities across the state in protecting and managing our natural landscapes. We are looking for individuals with experience and skills in areas such as land management, fundraising, community engagement, ecological science, or marketing/communications. Knowledge of the community landcare movement will be highly regarded.

We encourage applicants from all backgrounds, perspectives, and locations across Tasmania, and especially welcome those identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

As a Director, you will work with the Board to:

  • Oversee the management of Landcare Tasmania, ensuring it achieves its strategic goals.
  • Exercise powers and make decisions on behalf of the Association, except those required to be voted on by members.
  • Delegate responsibilities to employees, members, or others when appropriate.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Governance and Board Duties:

  • Understand how Landcare Tasmania operates, including its services, membership, staff, and subcommittees.
  • Regularly attend Board meetings and stay updated on Board matters.
  • Be familiar with the Constitution and ensure obligations are met professionally and on time.
  • Approve documents related to the Association’s finances and ensure compliance with funding agreements and laws.
  • Help plan the Board's activities and ensure new Directors understand their roles.

Financial Oversight:

  • Oversee the financial affairs of Landcare Tasmania, ensuring timely and clear financial reporting.
  • Help prepare and review the annual budget.
  • Ensure financial records are accurate and audited annually.
  • Manage risks to the organisation and ensure the financial operation of the Tasmanian Landcare Fund complies with legal requirements.

Ambassadorship:

  • Represent and support Landcare Tasmania publicly.
  • Attend and participate in Landcare events and other external functions.

Adhere to Good Governance Principles:

  • Act in good faith and in the best interests of Landcare Tasmania.
  • Exercise care, diligence, and honesty in fulfilling Director duties.
  • Avoid conflicts of interest, and disclose them if they arise.
  • Maintain confidentiality of Board information.
  • Ensure decisions are independent and based on sound judgment.
  • Avoid any conduct that could discredit Landcare Tasmania.

Professional Development:

  • Pursue opportunities for ongoing learning to ensure the Board has the necessary skills.
