Summary of Role

The Medical Educator is a senior position within AIDA for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander doctor who brings their experience in Indigenous medical education and unique medico-cultural perspective to review and develop content to support the innovation and expansion of AIDA’s Cultural Safety Training.

AIDA’s training is unique in its aim as ‘the clinical application of cultural safety, developed and delivered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctor. The training incorporates online cultural awareness training ‘An Introduction to Cultural Safety’ and full day face to face workshops, ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health in Clinical Practice’.

The position is required to travel interstate on occasion, to support team engagement and role-specific activities.

Key Responsibilities

Working independently and in collaboration with AIDA Programs and Outcomes portfolio staff delivering the cultural safety program, the Medical Educator will:

  • By a key contributor to AIDA’s cultural safety program to ensure continued program quality and expansion.
  • Develop a suite of generic, and bespoke, clinical case studies for inclusion in cultural safety training workshops to meet the learning needs of a wide range of participants, diverse communities, and geographical, cultural and clinical settings.
  • Guide the ongoing review and update of AIDA’s Cultural Safety Training Facilitator Guide, workshop outlines, manuals and program resources.
  • Collaborate effectively with AIDA staff at various levels in relation to ongoing development of AIDA’s cultural safety training.
  • Facilitate debriefing with facilitators after each cultural safety workshop.
  • Review and update the cultural safety program content on an annual basis or as required.
  • Research innovation and the evidence base relating to cultural safety to ensure continuous quality improvement and maximise the systemic impact of the cultural safety program.
  • Provide advice to inform the further expansion of AIDA’s cultural safety training.
  • Oversee AIDA’s applications for accreditation of continuous professional development with specialty colleges and other stakeholders.
  • Engage additional experts as required to develop appropriate material for the cultural safety program.
  • Build and maintain excellent working relationships across AIDA’s teams, with AIDA’s cultural safety training facilitators and other key stakeholders.
  • Promotion of AIDA’s cultural safety program with potential clients and at key events.
  • Inform AIDA Board, Commonwealth and other reporting.

Essential Skills

  • Proven commitment to culturally safe practice and improving self-determination and health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills.
  • Thorough understanding of medical education continuum.
  • Qualification and/or proven experience in medical education including curriculum content development.
  • Demonstrated understanding of adult learning principles (andragogy) and ability to apply these in course design and delivery.
  • Ability to develop clinical case studies for diverse audiences.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence and negotiate with individuals and groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and manage competing demands and priorities.

  • Experience developing and delivering cultural safety training for doctors and the broader healthcare sector.
