The Positions

Applications are invited for fellowship positions in Medical Oncology commencing in February 2025, for a period of 12 months. The purpose of the positions is to enhance capacity for the conduct of clinical research at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse.

  • The breast cancer fellow position will participate in quaternary sub-specialty clinics, provide continuity of care for patients, and participate in clinical trials and other clinical and translational research within the Breast Cancer Service (Medical Oncology).
  • The sarcoma fellow position will have a particular focus on investigator-initiated multi-disciplinary research including registries, audits, biobanking, and clinical trials within the Sarcoma service (Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgery); and gain experience in other quaternary sub-specialty clinics

Your main duties will be to:

  • See, assess, advise and determine optimal management of patients referred to the Department of Medical Oncology as either outpatients or inpatients.
  • Participate in the screening, consenting and recruitment of patients to clinical trials, and their ongoing management, including necessary meetings with clinical trial sponsors.
  • Establish, coordinate and contribute to investigator-initiated multi-disciplinary research.
  • Attend outpatient clinic and ward rounds and provide on-call duties as determined in conjunction with the Head of Department and Director of Physician Training, and carry out the prescription of investigational therapies under supervision.
  • Carry out clinical research projects.
  • Provide teaching to students, nurses and advanced trainees as required.
  • Attend and present material at hospital and scientific meetings. 

Selection Criteria

It is essential to be a Medical Practitioner and be registered, or eligible for registration, with the Medical Board of Australia. We anticipate candidates will either be in their 3rd year of advanced training in medical oncology, or have recently received their FRACP in medical oncology.

Consideration will be given to part-time positions (0.5 FTE) for candidates enrolled in higher research degrees affiliated with the department.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to accept responsibility and carry out specific tasks with minimal supervision but possess professional judgment to determine the need to seek advice from senior medical staff.
  • Extensive experience in the management and use of chemotherapy in treating patients.
  • Demonstrated ability and interest in undertaking clinical research.
  • Ability and willingness to teach at various levels, including undergraduates, post graduate oncology trainees, and nursing personnel.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing self-development and improvement, including interest in pursuing a higher degree.
