About the Role

A new opportunity to join the highly regarded Life Without Barriers Youth and Family Mental Health Services team who have been delivering clinical and psychosocial mental heath services across Tasmania since 2013.  The Youth Mental Health Clinician will be an integral part of a new, dynamic and innovative service providing community based support.  The Clinician will engage in two key aspects to the role to deliver both early intervention support, and broader community based mental health literacy promotion approaches to youth mental health.  The Clinician will work therapeutically 1-1 and in groups with young people (and at times with families) with mild to moderate mental illness in community, as well as working in the local community with key stakeholders and young people, to increase mental health literacy and wellbeing.  The role will work closely with other key organisations in the region and develop collaborative working relationships and processes to deliver effective models of youth mental health support in the Circular Head and broader North West Region.  The Youth Mental Health Clinician will be appointed for a maximum term contract of three years, working flexibly part time two to three days per week.  

We are ideally seeking applicants who hold qualifications in an allied health discipline, however those with relevant experience in delivering youth mental health interventions are also encouraged to apply.   

Key Responsibilities

• Provide intake to determine appropriate fit for the service and refer to other more appropriate services if required during intake, or during/conclusion of the episode of care.
• Carry out mental health assessments, formulations and risk assessments to inform appropriate therapeutic interventions for brief episodes of care.
• Provide a range of evidence-based psychological interventions to individuals/groups presenting with mild to moderate mental illness.
• Monitor and review clients ’ progress  against the care plan and outcome measures, and provide up to date progress reports to the partner organisations demonstrating client outcomes.
• Work collaboratively with key community partners and with young people to provide early intervention mental health and wellbeing promotion and literacy activities through various modalities such as education sessions, secondary consultation, presentations, group work, activities and events.
• Work collaboratively with key community partners to develop effective youth mental health services delivery and referral pathways in the Circular Head and North West region.
• Provide accurate data regarding service operations and client outcomes.

Skills & Experience

• A tertiary degree in Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Mental Health Nursing or other relevant qualification

• Demonstrated experience working in a range of settings as determined by client need and location, including outreach and off site hub locations that may be in rural and remote areas and experience in e-health platforms such as video conferencing and online interventions.
• Demonstrated experience and commitment to engage in 1:1 work with young people and families with flexible, creative and client focussed recovery approaches.
• Highly developed analytical skills and demonstrated experience in carrying assessments, developing care plans, and intervention with clients, using a range of evidence based psychological interventions.
• The ability to work collaboratively with agencies that support people with mental health needs such as with mental health services, schools, GPs, Psychiatrists, or other statutory or community based services.
• Demonstrated experience in delivering mental health literacy and promotion activities through community development approaches such as education sessions, psychoeducation, presentations, group work, promotion activities and events.

Successful candidates will be required to clear probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check and hold Tasmanian Working With Vulnerable People Registration.  A current drivers licence and occasional intrastate travel will be required.
