Since its foundation in 1954 as an independent learned academy, the Australian Academy of Science has championed science for the benefit of all.

Independent, evidence-based, and inclusive, the Academy works tirelessly to convene experts and deliver sought-after scientific advice that influences Australia’s actions and contributes to global science.

The Academy is an independent non-profit organisation that recognises outstanding contributions to science and research, provides expert advice to government, contributes to the development of science policy, promotes science education and public understanding of science, and fosters international scientific relations.

The Academy is currently seeking to appoint a new Director, Engagement. A full-time, ongoing role, based in Canberra, the Director will play a major part in leading a comprehensive suite of strategic, targeted and impactful engagement activities taking place across the Academy, including public affairs and communication initiatives, ensuring strong connections with a range of internal and external stakeholders, identifying and nurturing robust, productive, enduring relationships of all kinds.

Working across the Academy, they will seek to extend and build upon its standing, reach and influence, both nationally and internationally. In alignment with the Academy’s strategic mission to disseminate scientific knowledge for the greater good, they will develop and implement a strong and innovative engagement strategy.

In collaboration with the Council and Secretariat, this senior executive role will drive significant stakeholder engagement, contributing to the Academy’s ability to shape and influence science, scientific advice in Australia and abroad.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, and accountable to the Secretary Engagement, the Academy seeks a deeply science-aware professional, who understands both the challenges and opportunities facing a sector upon which our society continue to become ever more intertwined and dependent. Strong networks and connections in media, research, government, corporate, and philanthropic networks, will help to drive success, along with vision, natural leadership ability, communications, and relationship-building skills.
