Living Proud, was established over 50 years ago as the Campaign Against Moral Persecution WA (CAMP WA). Initially focused on decriminalising homosexuality, it began with the ‘Phone a Friend’ support line, which evolved into the current Living Proud service.
Today, Living Proud is the WA partner of QLife, a national LGBTIQ+ peer support and referral service, provides health and wellbeing initiatives, community programs, training, and projects like Queer and Accessible to improve the lives of LGBTIQA+SB individuals.
Family and intimate partner violence affects people across all communities, but LGBTIQA+SB individuals face distinct barriers due to stigma, societal norms, and systemic discrimination. Research shows that LGBTIQA+SB people experience intimate partner violence at similar rates to heterosexual individuals, yet heteronormative and cis-normative frameworks make it harder for many to identify, name, and report their experiences.
Living Proud has partnered with Ruah Community Services to deliver specialised FDSV support to the LGBTIQA+SB community and consultation to services working with them. The Specialist Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence Worker will actively support the establishment and ongoing development of the program and provide assessment, support, information, advocacy, and referral pathways to people accessing the service using person-centred, strength-based, trauma-informed and anti-oppressive casework.
Critical to this role is to have a complex and intersectional understanding of the issues faced by the LGBTIQA+SB communities and specifically those living with or impacted by family or intimate partner violence, poor mental health, isolation, disability, homelessness and/or suicidality.
The Specialist Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence Worker (LGBTIQA+SB Communities) is:
