MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. About the role

Reporting to the Country Director, the Technical Lead will be responsible for implementing all aspects of Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM) operations and related tasks in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and international best practice.

This role will include conducting technical risk assessments, coordinating and providing technical oversight on WAM projects and the post holder therefore must have prior experience of working with IATGs and MOSAICs. The role may include weapons and munition destruction, design and delivery of PSSM training, and design and oversight of rehabilitation and/or construction of new facilities.

The post holder will also be required to support the programme by contributing technical knowledge and clearance targets into proposals and reports. They will also lead liaison efforts with national authorities and Security and Defence Forces, while coordinating with MAG's Programme Quality Team to align in-country activities with organisational standards. This position plays a crucial role in improving safety, security, and operational effectiveness in WAM across MAG's global operations.

About you

The successful candidate must have significant technical knowledge of WAM type activities and be IMAS EOD level 3 qualified with experience in field operations and of conducting bulk demolitions. You must be able to develop, review and comply with security and technical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and to contribute technical knowledge and clearance targets. The postholder will have experience of working in SALW/ PSSM type Operations in developing countries and of managing field operations. You will be experienced in leading, motivating and managing a diverse team of people, and in mentoring and coaching others. You will also have experience of conducting formal or informal training and the transfer of appropriate skills to others. Experience of working independently for extended periods of time in ‘stand-alone’ environments with minimal supervision is also required for this role.

About the Papua New Guinea programme

MAG’s programme in Papua New Guinea will seek to assist the national government and security forces to better secure and account for their stocks of firearms and SALW. MAG will conduct technical assessments to prioritise Physical Stockpile and Security Management (PSSM) needs and respond to the measures identified within the assessments. Our team will initially be based in Port Moresby, but the successful applicant will lead on technical assessments and be expected to travel extensively throughout the country.
