Want to use your software skills to make big impacts to children’s lives and improving human health? We are seeking a talented and experienced Software Lead to join our Bioinformatics Methods team. In this role:

  • Open to a broad range of candidates, you will lead software implementation supported by a team of experts in bioinformatics, machine learning and data science in the field of rare genetic disorders. Prior knowledge outside software engineering is not expected, but a passion to be involved in a multi-disciplinary team is
  • Gain or expand your expertise in large-scale data analysis, analytics, cloud infrastructure and machine learning techniques relevant to genomics, through developing new applications for analysing genomic data
  • Maintain high technical standards and quality in our software systems, ensuring robust architecture and effective methodologies
  • Take up opportunity to manage technical staff, providing both technical and non-technical leadership
  • Oversee and manage a range of established big data applications and infrastructure developed by the team

About your new team

At the cutting edge of genomics and data science, the Bioinformatics Methods (BM) team is a dynamic group of software engineers, bioinformaticians, data scientists, and genomics experts. Our mission is to build and deliver advanced genomics analysis methods that empower researchers at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) to unlock the full potential of their genomic data.

Specialising in the latest advancements in genomics technology, we collaborate with research groups across Australia and globally to push the boundaries of scientific discovery. Our team has successfully deployed significant software infrastructure, including seqr—a leading application for rare disease research based on distributed search technology.

Situated at the heart of research translation within the Royal Children’s Hospital campus and linked with the Victorian Clinical Genetics Services (VCGS), our team offers a unique opportunity to apply data science in meaningful ways, helping individuals with debilitating genetic disorders to find answers and advancing science to better understand the mechanisms behind these disorders.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Operational deployment, management and oversight of the software infrastructure for the BM group, including MCRI’s Seqr instance
  • Develop and maintain data engineering solutions to solve software problems both within the group and customers of the group
  • Development, architecture , design , implementation and support of software used by the group using modern software practises. This includes ensuring security principles are adhered to throughout the software stack

What we need from you:

  • A relevant degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a related field
  • Proven experience in software development, including a strong track record of designing, developing, and deploying complex applications and infrastructure
  • Experience with computing infrastructure technologies including cloud platforms, containerisation, and container orchestration and infrastructure as code frameworks
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and collaborate on technical projects, for example, oversight of technical teams, mentoring junior staff, or examples of externally collaborative work
  • Strong proficiency in at least one of Python, TypeScript, Java (or JVM languages)
  • A demonstrated ability and openness to learn new a broad range of software technologies and frameworks
  • Knowledge of software development lifecycle practices include source control, CI/CD and automated testing frameworks
  • Experience with bioinformatics, genomics or other scientific applications a plus
