About the team:
The Carer Lived Experience team is creatively responding to the needs of carers by developing a range of support and educational supports for carers/families/supporters. This includes offering carers individual support via the Carer Peer Support program, as well as group connection and educational opportunities via the Carer Lived Experience Group Program. In addition, the Carer Lived Experience team works on a broader systemic level to ensure that the carer lived experience perspective is included at all levels of service development, delivery and training.
Your new role:
The Carer Peer Coordinator role works across Royal Melbourne Hospital Mental Health Services (RMHMS) , and works within the Carer Lived Experience team to build collaboration and inclusion of families, carers, and supporters at all levels of service delivery, development, and training.
The Carer Peer Support Coordinator is the Carer Peer Support Practise Lead, mentoring and providing day to day support to Carer Peer Support Workers (CPSWs), as well as providing high quality direct carer peer support. This includes supporting CPSWs with understanding their unique role and the boundaries of the work, task prioritisation, navigating challenging referrals/situations and maintaining their wellbeing. The Carer Peer Support Coordinator also provides orientation and education to the service about Carer Peer Support - ensuring key staff understand the principles and scope of the work and establishing processes and support structures for the program.
In this role, you will:
- Utilise your carer lived experience and leadership skills to promote and expand the Carer Peer Support Program across the service.
- Provide day to day support and mentoring to carer peer support workers, including guidance and education around working within the scope and boundaries of carer peer support.
- Review workload with carer peer support workers and collaborate to sustain wellbeing and prompt follow up to carers.
- Work in collaboration with Clinical leads to promote the carer peer support program as well as the referral pathways.
- Maintain and review processes for carer peer support work, in collaboration with the Carer Lived Experience leads.
- Provide regular carer peer support updates to Carer Lived Experience Leads regarding current carer issues, needs and gaps.
About you:
- Significant lived experience of caring for a person that has accessed public mental health services.
- Experience as a carer peer support worker, particularly within the public mental health setting.
- Ability to work with and advocate for the needs of carers, families, and supporters of the service from all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, and abilities.
- Excellent, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently, including highly developed organisation and time management skills.
- Experience providing a carer perspective in various activities, including as an active participant of committees and working groups.
- Experience working with a range of stakeholders.
