Your new role

The Occupational Therapist position sits within the Child Health Team at Merri Health, alongside speech pathology, psychology and audiology services. The Occupational Therapist is responsible for providing services to children from birth to school age who require support with self-help skills, learning and playing, motor skills, social skills and sensory development.

The Occupational Therapist provides services within a family centred framework. The Child Health Team offers individual, group, education and consultative service delivery models.

  • Providing high quality, evidence based occupational therapy services and health education in line with accepted professional standards.
  • Assessment and management of paediatric occupational therapy clients using individual, group, education and consultative models.
  • Providing services in a manner that respects the confidentiality of the client and family.
  • In collaboration, developing, implementing and evaluating therapy programs appropriate to the work of the Child Health Team.
  • Referring, liaising and consulting with others involved in the individual child and family’s healthcare provision, including local agencies.
  • Providing health education and promotion activities, in line with the Child Health Team’s strategic plan.
  • Attending monthly Child Health Team and other organisation meetings as required.
  • Participating in peer review/support to ensure services respond to client needs and remain current in best practice principles.
  • Participating in relevant networks and community forums and maintain links with key external agencies.
  • Ensuring the program and service delivery reflects the cultural and social diversity of the local community.
  • Providing clinical supervision of occupational therapy students.
  • In collaboration with other team members, completing and reporting on quality assurance projects in line with the team’s strategic plan.

To succeed in this role you will have

Essential:

  • A graduate or post-graduate degree in occupational therapy, with appropriate registration with AHPRA
  • A minimum of 3 years experience providing occupational therapy services to children in a community setting
  • Ability to independently manage an occupational therapy caseload
  • Experience developing, running and evaluating group and individual therapy programs.
  • Strong clinical problem-solving skills and experience developing shared goals in partnership with families
  • A demonstrated understanding of multi-disciplinary teamwork and implementation of evidence-based programs that support positive outcomes in early years
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including computer literacy

Desirable

  • Experience in working in culturally and linguistically diverse communities
  • Experience in supervising occupational therapy students
