The Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) Manager will play a crucial role in the planning, implementation, and management of conservation initiatives within the Indigenous Protected Area. With a deep understanding of Indigenous land management practices, community engagement, and environmental conservation, the successful applicant will ensure effective protection and sustainable management of the designated Indigenous Protected Area is achieved.

Qualifications & experience

  • Proven experience in Indigenous land management and conservation, with a deep understanding of cultural protocols and Indigenous knowledge systems.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to plan, implement, and evaluate conservation programs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with Indigenous communities, government agencies, and stakeholders.
  • Experience in building and maintaining partnerships and negotiating agreements.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and regulations related to land and sea management.
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in environmental science, natural resource management, Indigenous studies, or a related field is desirable.
  • Experience living and working in a remote Indigenous community is desirable.
  • Coxswain ticket and experience boating in the waters within the Marthakal region is desirable.
  • Extensive 4WD experience is desirable.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Community engagement and collaboration with traditional landowners.
  • Planning and implementation of land and sea management activities.
  • Capacity building and training of the ranger teams.
  • Partnership development with key stakeholders.
  • Monitoring and reporting on activities and initiatives.
