Overview

The Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Melbourne) (MIC) is seeking an experienced Manager to lead three family violence projects, focusing on both the prevention of family violence and responsive support for migrant and refugee communities in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

This role requires close collaboration with family violence service providers in the region and includes the supervision of a Family Violence Therapeutic Counsellor to establish effective referral pathways between MIC’s internal programs and external organisations.

The prevention program aims to address the gendered drivers and reinforcing factors of family violence, promote gender equality, empower individuals from migrant and refugee backgrounds to challenge inappropriate behaviours, and reduce the incidence of family violence in these communities.

The response program focuses on raising awareness and early intervention for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

Background

MIC supports people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, encompassing the Local Government Areas of Boroondara, Knox, Manningham, Maroondah, Monash, Whitehorse, and Yarra Ranges.

Governed by a Board of Directors, MIC’s objectives include:

  • Providing support and emergency relief to migrant families and individuals in crisis.
  • Delivering post-arrival services to ensure effective settlement and orientation.
  • Enhancing settlement services and planning for migrants in the region.
  • Building strong partnerships with mainstream agencies to ensure culturally sensitive service delivery.
  • Identifying service gaps and providing guidance on service improvements.
  • Exploring technology-based solutions to enhance information access on available services.
  • Ensuring a child-safe environment aligned with Child Safe Standards in all MIC operations.

Position Context

The Manager, Family Violence, will lead family violence initiatives and strategies at MIC, working in partnership with the Settlement Engagement and Transition Services (SETS) program and the Aged and Disability Programs. This role involves collaboration with community leaders, faith leaders, and community members, including women, to deliver education, awareness programs, and response initiatives aimed at preventing and addressing family violence in migrant and refugee communities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing MIC staff capacity to provide support, information, and referrals to those affected by family violence.
  • Supporting MIC staff and community leaders in identifying and responding to family violence and delivering training as needed.
  • Implementing the "Working Together Project" funded by the Victorian Government’s Family Safety Victoria, building warm referral pathways and a co-case management model to support victim/survivors of family violence from newly arrived backgrounds
  • Community Development: Lead community development activities with refugee and migrant communities and associations to enhance their capacity to prevent and respond to family violence.
  • Partnerships and Networks: Develop and maintain effective partnerships with agencies and service providers in the Eastern Metropolitan Region (EMR).
  • Program Development: Work with refugee communities and local agencies to create programs that meet community needs.
  • Casework: Provide effective casework for those at risk of or experiencing family violence, focusing on CALD communities.
  • Education and Awareness: Deliver information sessions and activities to equip CALD communities with the skills to prevent and respond to family violence and access support services.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Proven community development skills and experience in the family violence sector.
  • Experience working with refugee communities and knowledge of settlement processes.
  • Strong project management skills, including planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Experience working with victim/survivors of family violence.
  • Understanding of the barriers faced by CALD communities in accessing family violence support.
  • Experience in building partnerships with external agencies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, networking, consultation, and negotiation skills.
  • Sound organizational and time management abilities.
  • Experience in meeting reporting requirements for government funding.
  • Familiarity with the MARAM Framework and Family Violence and Child Wellbeing Information Sharing Schemes.

Desirable

  • Completion of MARAM training (accredited or non-accredited).
  • A valid Australian Driver’s Licence.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Bilingual skills in a relevant community language.

Position Dimensions

  • Reporting: Reports to the MIC CEO.
  • Collaboration: Works closely with MIC staff and volunteers.
  • Project Management: Oversees project objectives and work plans as outlined in the funding agreements
  • Accountability: Provides regular reports, attends staff and network meetings, and liaises with funding bodies as required.
