About the role

The Community Care Unit (CCU) is a residential service providing intensive treatment and recovery support to help people experiencing serious mental health issues whose lives have been disrupted making living independently difficult. Clients can access staff 24/7 whilst being supported to stabilise their mental health, define recovery goals and wellbeing outcomes, build daily living skills, strengthen relationships with families and carers, develop social connections and community networks and increase capacity to live independently. The CCU service provides personalised one-to-one support, shared supports, workshops and group activities based on client’s strengths and goals as identified in their individual recovery plan.

We are a seeking compassionate, self-motivated Community Mental Health Practitioner for a 8 month fixed term, part time (30.4 hours per week) opportunity with possible extension to work on a 24/7 rotating roster in the Cairns area. You will deliver intensive person-centred, recovery-oriented supports to clients to build their daily living skills, develop social and community connections, achieve wellbeing goals and capacity to live independently in the community. 

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver high quality services and facilitate positive educational and social experiences.
  • Support clients to return to their community, live independently and enjoy a meaningful life through a staged approach to recovery.
  • Provide information and mentoring to clients to establish relationships with families and carers, create community networks and access to relevant services.
  • Plan and deliver group programs that aid clients to build their skills and focus on recovery.
  • Collaborate with a range of services and the community to ensure a co-ordinated, integrated response to client’s recovery goals.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Mental Health, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or other health-related field.
  • Able to provide a record of Vaccination Preventable Diseases or able to obtain vaccinations against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chicken Pox, Whooping Cough, Hepatitis B or other diseases as required by our Partnership with QLD Health.
  • Expertise in working with people with mental health issues, complex needs and interacting with families and carers.
  • Proven capability to implement therapeutic, recovery oriented frameworks and practices including risk mitigation, trauma informed care and family inclusive practice.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Community Services sector and ability to build strong relationships with service providers, clinical teams and key stakeholders.
