About the role

North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency is seeking a Senior Solicitor / Intermediate Solicitor - Criminal Law to join our dynamic team in Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek, or Alice Springs. In this role, you will be responsible for providing high-quality legal representation and advice to our clients, with a focus on criminal law matters.

What you'll be doing

  • Represent clients in criminal court proceedings, including bail applications, pleas, trials and appeals
  • Advise clients on criminal law matters and their legal rights and options
  • Conduct legal research, prepare legal documents, and liaise with relevant stakeholders
  • Maintain detailed and accurate case files and records
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of NAAJA's legal strategies and policies
  • Collaborate with the wider legal team to ensure the provision of a comprehensive and effective legal service
  • Mentor junior staff and provide guidance and support as required

What we're looking for

Senior Solicitor:

  • Admission (or eligibility for admission) as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory with a minimum of 5 years post-admission experience
  • Significant experience in criminal law, with a strong understanding of the legal system and court procedures
  • Excellent legal research, writing and advocacy skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Commitment to social justice and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

Intermediate Solicitor:

  • Admission (or eligibility for admission) as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory with a minimum of 3 years post-admission experience
  • Experience in criminal law, with a solid understanding of the legal system and court procedures
  • Excellent legal research, writing and advocacy skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Commitment to social justice and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

Requirements

  • Current Driver's Licence
  • Ability to obtain a satisfactory “Working with Children Clearance” (Ochre Card) upon commencement
  • Satisfactory criminal history check and no history of disqualification from employment by a legal practice
  • Ability and willingness to travel to remote areas
