The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) is the national peak body representing 145 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), that provide primary healthcare across Australia. 

ACCHOs are the third largest employer of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. They range from large multi-functional services employing several medical practitioners and providing a wide range of services, to small services which rely on Aboriginal health practitioners and/or nurses to provide the bulk of primary health care services. The sector is rapidly increasing its service delivery footprint, especially in disability, aged care, mental health, Social and Emotional Wellbeing and Alcohol and Other Drugs. 

It's an exciting and transformative time to be working in the health sector. In recent years, there has been a renewed focus on improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. NACCHO has been instrumental in driving systems reform in the context of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and recent budget announcements.

About the team/s

The NACCHO program teams work to support members to deliver services to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. To achieve this, they provide support to initiatives, partnerships, and deliver programs across a wide range of stakeholders that benefit the community-controlled sector.

NACCHO is looking for experienced Assistant Directors to work within and across the following programs: (Copy the URL to download a copy of the Position Description).

About the role

NACCHO Assistant Directors are a key leadership role within the organisation and their program teams. Assistant Directors will sensitively and effectively use the following skills to embed the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and promote and enable the expertise of the ACCHO sector: Assistant Directors will use the following skills to achieve results to a high standard:

  • Outstanding communication skills, verbal and written, including the ability to present complex and technical information in a simple and clear manner, and tailor written material to different audiences.
  • Ability to think strategically, including identifying and monitoring risks and developing risk mitigation strategies.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills across a range of settings.
  • An ability to collaborate and influence at senior levels.
  • Effective problem-solving and analytical skills and sound judgement.
  • A collaborative approach to achieving shared goals and ability to manage and lead a small team.

Qualifications, technical expertise and experience required

  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff and teams is essential.
  • Experience at level in a similar organisation is essential.
  • Tertiary qualifications in health or a related field is highly desirable.
