National Association for the Visual Arts Ltd

ABOUT NAVA

The National Association of Visual Arts (NAVA) is an independent, not-for-profit, membership organisation which brings together the many voices of the contemporary arts sector to improve fundamental conditions of work and practice. We do this through advocacy, education and the Code of Practice for Visual Arts, Craft and Design (the Code).

The Code recently went through a major three-year revision to more adequately reflect the industry’s growing concern with issues of justice, access, fair work and representation. The sixth edition of the Code has been endorsed by the Federal Government as part of the National Cultural Policy Revive: a place for every story, a story for every place. It is recognised and utilised across the sector as a fundamental reference document. At NAVA, we strive to lead by example, embedding good practices within our own operations.

As well as championing the rights of artists as workers and setting the standards for equitable engagements in the visual arts, NAVA supports artists and arts workers through a number of services, including insurance, professional development and education, the Artists’ Benevolent Fund, auspicing and one-on-one advice and support.

NAVA is a national organisation with a small team of staff across four states. We acknowledge the Gadigal, Wangal, Dharug, Dharawal, Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi, Jinibara, Ngunnawal, Ngambri and Dja Dja Wurrung as the Traditional Custodians and knowledge-holders of the lands on which NAVA staff currently live, learn and work. The NAVA community, including Members and the Board of Directors are based across hundreds of sovereign nations and unceded lands throughout the continent that has become colonially known as Australia. NAVA pays our deepest respects to all First Nations communities' ancestors and Elders.
