About your new role

The Intake and Assessment Officer is part of a multidisciplinary mental health team, delivering high quality mental health intake, assessment, triage, and referral services for individuals in the community who experience mental health issues and are seeking support. The priority of the HtH PDIS is to connect people seamlessly to the most appropriate local service to meet their identified needs, consistent with the 'stepped care' approach.

Intake and Assessment Officers will provide an initial identification and assessment of individuals' needs, as well as assist people requiring general information. The officer will have responsibility for undertaking an assessment using the Commonwealth's Initial Assessment and Referral Decision Support Tool (IAR- DST) and work closely with the clinicians within the team to determine the level of clinical oversight, and key decisions required in matching people with the appropriate support service.

The Intake and Assessment Officers will work as part of a collaborative team approach, supported by the clinical mental health team, including the clinical leads, and will have regular opportunities to reflect upon their practice and access comprehensive training and supervision. Some administrative tasks will be part of the role to support the team.

What you will bring to the role

Essential:

  • Compliant with SA Health workplace health and safety requirements, including Requirements for Workers in Healthcare Settings.
  • A valid Australian Driver's license.
  • Demonstrated experience in the provision of mental health intake, assessment and supporting consumers with presenting mental health concerns.
  • Engage consumers, using a strengths-based approach.
  • Experience working with client information systems, maintaining accurate documentation and data collection.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within a team.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and build trust to deal with sensitive and difficult situations in an empathetic manner.
  • Ability to adapt communication style to meet the needs of a diverse range of people.
  • Proven ability to work productively in a changing and agile environment.

Desirable:

  • Certificate IV in Mental Health /Community Services/Youth Work/ Diploma in Counselling (or equivalent)
  • A lived experience of mental illness and a demonstrated journey of recovery. Intake and Assessment workers who have a lived experience, possess a rich understanding of the processes of recovery. Lived Experienced workers should be willing to purposefully use their own story to help others further their own understanding of recovery. As with other Neami staff, Lived Experience workers have access to a tailored training program and to regular opportunities to reflect upon their practice.
  • Experience as a support worker or peer worker, supporting consumers and helping navigate to referral pathways or knowledge of referral pathways that include psychological services, psychosocial services, Alcohol and other drugs and social and emotional wellbeing services that are culturally appropriate
  • Adequately trained in mental health assessment and referral skills; and
  • Experience using crisis intervention techniques and escalation procedures
  • High level computer skills with use of Excel and Microsoft, and the Carelink Database
