About your new role

Peer Support workers will provide practical, emotional, social, and service access support that explores and responds to a person's needs through a process of mutual listening, learning, doing, being, belonging and healing.

Peer Support Workers will collaborate closely with the Lived Experience Service Manager, Peer Support Lead and clinicians within Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Service (MSAMHS) to deliver supports that Facilitate people to recognise how they can feel safe enough in periods of distress and connect them to ongoing support if required. Peer Support Workers at Neami National function within a collaborative team approach and are supported by regular opportunities to reflect upon their practice and access comprehensive training and development.

What you will bring to the role

  • Personal lived/living experience of mental health challenges, distress, injustice and journey of wellbeing/healing and ability to apply learnings as your primary way of working
  • Willingness to intentionally and purposefully share your lived experience to support the recovery and growth of service visitors and staff
  • Understanding of Lived Experience (Peer) principles and the Consumer/Carer movements to ground practice in collective knowledge
  • A strong understanding of supporting people experiencing emotional distress; and an ability to articulate and promote the value of and strengths gained from lived experiences of recovery
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful professional relationships that have clear boundaries with service visitors, staff and partner organisations
  • A nuanced understanding of mental health systems and service navigation
  • Understanding of purposefully engaging with consumers within the short time constraints of the program
  • Personal lived/living experience of recovery as a family, friend or carer. Your recovery experience may be related to mental health, suicidal crisis, drugs and alcohol use or trauma
  • Willingness to identify or be identified by others as a professional with lived experience of recovery
  • Willingness to share and draw on lived experience purposefully in the role to instill confidence and hope in others about the journey of recovery
