  • Full-Time Permanent
  • Classification: SCHADS Level 3 with a salary range of $73,883 - $79,218 per annum (pro rata) + Superannuation

About your new role

Peer Support Workers are integral members of the multidisciplinary team and aim to represent 50% of the workforce within the Whittlesea Mental Health & Wellbeing Local. You will work alongside and collaborate with a team of mental health clinicians, AOD workers, family practitioners, and other specialised roles.

Peer Support workers draw on their lived/living experience of recovery from mental illness, mental health crisis or caring for someone living with a mental illness to instil confidence and hope in others about the journey of recovery. Peer workers provide intentional peer support, by drawing on their own personal stories of recovery, and improved wellbeing to foster empowerment, hope and engagement for guests. Delivering a 'Peer First and Peer Last' approach the Peer Support Workers will support a high engagement of care, through actively greeting and supporting consumers throughout their time at Whittlesea Mental Health & Wellbeing Local. Peer Support Workers are an important element of the team approach and bring the wisdom of experience to many aspects of service delivery including intake interviews, service promotion, partnership work, team meetings and reflective practice.

Welcome and Connect Team

Working within the Welcome and Connect team, you will play an important role in welcoming and introducing guests to the service via phone or as they walk into the centre seeking support. You will help them navigate the service options available and aim to build a supportive and trusting connection.

You will also provide support to a small caseload of guests, and engage in service promotion, partnership work, group work

** At times you may be required to provide support in an alternative Community and Pathways Team

What you will bring to the role

Essential

  • Personal lived/living experience of recovery as a family, friend or carer. Your recovery experience may be related to mental health, suicidal crisis, drugs and alcohol use or trauma
  • Willingness to identify or be identified by others as a professional with lived experience of recovery
  • Willingness to share and draw on lived experience purposefully in the role to instill confidence and hope in others about the journey of recovery
  • Experience of the public or private mental health system
  • Computer literacy
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrates an interest and understanding of others and ability to relate to people at all levels
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and build trust to deal with sensitive and difficult situations in a diplomatic manner
  • Ability to establish respectful professional relationships that have clear boundaries with consumers, staff and partner organisations
  • Mental Health Qualification: It is a requirement of the Peer Support Worker position that you hold, and provide Neami evidence of, a Mental Health (or equivalent Human Services, Community Services) qualification of Certificate IV level or above, or complete such a qualification within 2 years of your commencement of employment
  • All staff are required to adhere to Neami immunisation and vaccination policy directives to minimise the risk of vaccine preventable diseases to protect workers, other employees, consumers, and visitors

  • Current Australian drivers licence and access to a personal vehicle car
