About the NLC

The Northern Land Council (NLC) is an independent statutory authority of the Commonwealth. The NLC is established under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (NT) 1976 and its purpose is to serve its constituents who are Traditional Owners (TOs) and other Aboriginal people living in their region. Cultural knowledge and lived experience are central to the work that we do here at NLC. We are committed to enhancing Aboriginal peoples social, political and economic participation by supporting their aspirations and amplifying their voices on a range of issues impacting on their lands, seas, culture and communities.

About the opportunity

The Northern Land Council is in a period of transformation, and is strategically looking forward to ensure we deliver on our obligations and support our seven regions. As part of our growth and regionalisation we are ensuring we lead from the front and continue to develop and maintain strong foundations, focused on good governance, clear strategy and being a strong voice for our constituents. In order to support our future state, the NLC is looking for a suitable qualified and passionate General Manager Governance Strategy and Communications to join our senior leadership team.

Reporting to the CEO, this senior role will responsible for leading and managing a portfolio of key service areas related to our statutory obligations, in particular governance, compliance, strategy, advocacy and media. The position is accountable for maintaining strong organisational performance and strategically contributing to the identification of specific issues and opportunities relevant to the NLC and TOs. This position will be accountable for driving an organisational culture of governance, compliance and risk management coupled with a high-level of engagement and advocacy activities aligned with our TO Centric delivery model.

About you

You are business savvy senior leader with a strong governance, community and business mindset that aligns with the NLC purpose and function. Focussed on accountability you will drive compliant and effective business processes. You are passionate about our communities and align with our TO centric model. Your excellent communication skills and collaborative approach will see you establish and maintain outstanding working relationships and trust with key stakeholders.

What you will need

  • Degree level qualifications in a relevant discipline
  • Extensive experience in a senior leadership role, with demonstrated experience in at least two of the key service areas managed by this GM portfolio
  • Sound knowledge of the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013 (PGPA Act) and related Rules and other legislation relevant to the NLC
  • High level cross-cultural, interpersonal and verbal communication skills with an ability to effectively liaise, engage and coordinate across an array of stakeholders (internal, traditional owners and external organisation) to build productive working relationships

What’s in it for you?

This position works closely with the CEO, and the senior leadership and offers a unique opportunity to support our Aboriginal communities in the NLC Region. Based in Darwin, with regular regional travel this position has an annual salary of $200,000 plus 14.5% superannuation, salary sacrificing and a work vehicle.
