About the Role

If you are skilled in GIS software, data management, and have a passion for contributing to Indigenous land rights and cultural preservation, join the NLC’s Anthropology team as a GIS Officer. This role will be instrumental in preparing administrative and field consultation maps, supporting various stakeholders on a range of projects and managing data under the Aboriginal Land Rights (ALRA) Act (1976) NT and Native Title Act (1993). Additionally, this position will collaborate with the GIS Supervisor to enhance GIS systems and applications for impactful mapping solutions for field apps and web-based mapping platforms.

The Northern Land Council (NLC) was established 50 years ago under the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act in 1976, to assist Aboriginal people in the Top End of the NT to acquire and manage their traditional lands, waters and seas. We are committed to enhancing Aboriginal peoples social, political and economic participation by supporting their aspirations and amplifying their voices on a range of issues impacting on their lands, seas, culture and communities.

What you will Bring

  • Skilled in creating high-quality maps using GIS software and effectively managing data with ESRI and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Proficient research skills with expertise in data analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • High level cross-cultural, interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

In addition to this, you will have: 

  • A Bachelor degree in Science/GIS or equivalent, preferably in cartography, surveying, geography, computing and/or relevant social science disciplines and/or a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Experience in GPS technology, including capture, manipulation and analysis of spatial data using GIS software.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the application of relational database systems and scripting languages, particularly Microsoft SQL Server and Python.
  • Current C Class Drivers Licence and the ability to travel remotely via 4wd and light aircraft.

  • This position is classified under our Enterprise Agreement at Professional 2 (PO2), with a commencing base salary of $78,724 per annum.
  • In addition to base salary, you will receive:
  • 14% superannuation;
  • District allowance starting at $2,539 per annum
  • Upon completion of 12 months of service an Annual airfare with a net (in hand) value of $2,724;
  • Generous leave entitlements such as 5 weeks annual leave, leaving loading, 18 days personal leave, and paid Christmas close down;
  • Salary packaging benefits of up to $15,900 and additional Meal Entertainment and Holiday Accommodation benefits up to $2,650 per year.
