The Northern Land Council (NLC) was established 50 years ago under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act in 1976, to assist Aboriginal people in the Top End of the Northern Territory to acquire and manage their traditional lands, waters and seas. We are committed to enhancing Aboriginal peoples social, political and economic participation by supporting their aspirations and amplifying their voices on a range of issues impacting on their lands, seas, culture and communities.

About the Role

NLC has steadily grown in strategic delivery and outcomes heading down a pathway of change and transformation as we move into a Traditional Owner (TO) centric focus with Activating Land and Sea Rights coupled with Building the Bush. As part of this exciting journey the People & Culture team has introduced a new position into their portfolio. We are looking for a Workplace Health and Safety Manager who can take lead of this critical function for NLC and assist us drive initiatives and programs that will enhance the overall safety and well-being culture of our workforce.

Commencing in the New Year, the WHS Manager will oversee the WHS team to manage and enhance the NLC WHS Management system and ensure that our workforce operates with a safety-first mindset and a focus on staff wellbeing. NLC is a relatively complex business encompassing regional teams and logistics, Rangers out in the field and our more traditional corporate based functions. This position will take a lead role in driving improvements in WHS performance through effective initiatives, education, monitoring and review that enable the accountability across all levels of the organisation.

What you will Bring

As a WHS Manager, you will bring a wealth of experience in successful safety program implementation, risk management, and strategic safety direction, preferably in a comparable industry or complex environment. Your excellent interpersonal and communication skills will be instrumental in building collaborative relationships across the organisation, ensuring a safe and secure work environment. To be considered for this new position you will have: -

  • At least an Advanced Diploma of Work Health & Safety or equivalent qualification
  • Minimum 5 years of proven experience in WHS system management, coupled with strong leadership skills in promoting and maintaining a safe working environment
  • Sound ICT literacy including use of information management software and systems and Microsoft Office 365.
  • Experience using ICAM for Lead Investigators or other relevant professional development would be considered a plus
  • Current C Class Drivers Licence
  • An ability to travel and work from remote sites
