The Domestic Violence Legal Service (DVLS) is a specialised stand-alone service which operates under the auspices of the NT Legal Aid Commission (Legal Aid NT). DVLS is committed to delivering high quality legal advice and representation to victim-survivors of domestic, family, and sexual violence (DFSV) and includes a dedicated support worker providing non-legal services to advance the safety and wellbeing of women and children. The service also undertakes law reform and policy, prevention and early intervention activities, such as the development and delivery of community legal education.
Under the supervision of the Managing Solicitor, the position will provide information, education, advocacy, referrals, legal support, legal advice, and legal representation services to victim-survivors of DFSV in the Darwin and Greater Darwin area.
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated solicitor who is looking to make a positive contribution to those whose lives are affected by DFSV. We are also interested in people who may have gained experience through volunteer work or student placements at organisations such as community legal services or legal aid commissions.
You will have a demonstrated knowledge of dynamics of DFSV and the ability to respond effectively to clients affected by DFSV, trauma and in crisis situations. You have experience in providing high quality legal advice, information, and appropriate referrals to other legal and non-legal services to clients from diverse backgrounds and have demonstrated ability to negotiate with police representatives, defendants, prosecutors, and others on behalf of clients.
Crucial in your success in this role is your strong interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds including First Nations Australians and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse people.
