Role Purpose:

The AOD Clinician Intake & Assessment is responsible for providing intake and assessment services to reduce AOD related harms to individuals and their families by linking clients into treatment, providing phone intakes, assessments and AOD brief interventions. The position aims to assist clients to access and engage in AOD services, provide Psychoeducation, and build insight, motivation and provide harm min and risk management strategies.

Key areas of focus:

  • Screening those contacting intake for suitability, prioritisation and on-refer as needed.
  • Completing phone-based intakes
  • Referral to consortium partners and external service providers post intake for the purpose of an assessment
  • Providing brief telephone interventions.
  • providing secondary consultations where necessary.
  • Operating within diverse therapeutic frameworks and modalities including:
  • Elements of Individual counselling.
  • Provision of brief intervention and bridging support
  • Family Inclusive Practice, and opportunistic interventions
  • Dual Diagnosis principles; and
  • Working with diverse communities including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, CALD and GLBTI communities.
  • Supporting clients with FV presentation using the MARAM framework
  • Conducting comprehensive AOD assessments including:
  • Ascertaining information on substance abuse, history, mental health, and risk.
  • Determining if a client is standard or complex nature; and
  • Utilising the Assessment Tool.
  • Providing information, education, and practical assistance to clients to help them to reduce the harms of their substance use to themselves and those around them.
  • Considering the needs and identifying any risks to vulnerable children, working with families to develop safety plans, and facilitating referrals to Child First and Family Service agents when indicated.
  • Maintaining a high standard of documentation, data collection and processes which comply with the accountability structures of professional, legislative, service contractual obligations and organisational standards. This includes ensuring that client files and electronic records are appropriate, accurate and up to date, with all relevant information included and maintained in a confidential manner.
  • Building strong and effective relationships with clients and their families, creating positive expectations and confidence in treatment; and

A week in the role:

If you were here last week, you would have:

  • Delivered individual counselling sessions to participants.
  • Assisted to facilitate and deliver group counselling sessions to participants.
  • Attended Counsellor’s group supervision with an external supervisor or engaged in an online/in-person professional development.
  • Attended case reviews with Clinical Advisor and Corrections Case Manager to provide therapeutic perspective on participant progress.
  • Been part of a Multi-disciplinary and Multi agency team.

Key Selection Criteria:

We are looking for an experienced and passionate AOD Clinician to support the ‘high intensity’ and ‘low intensity’ groups program, facilitated by program staff and peer workers.

To be successful in this role, you must have…

  • A Relevant Health, Social or Welfare related degree/tertiary qualification with one-years’ experience and/or substantial experience or an Associate Diploma with relevant experience .
  • Hold a Certificate IV in AOD or have completed the required competencies (or able to within the first 12 months of employment). Refer to Appendix A*.
  • Proven ability to effectively work with people and families experiencing problematic alcohol and other drugs use in a respectful, compassionate, and positive manner.
  • Demonstrated understanding of community-based interventions for reducing alcohol and drug related harm.
  • Proven ability to work with a range of people and organisations (including specific work groups such as Aboriginal, CALD and Forensic clients) in a non-judgmental and respectful manner.
  • A demonstrated commitment to teamwork and the ability to take appropriate individual and team responsibility for the welfare of clients.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with clients, families, colleagues, stakeholders, and other service providers.

*Appendix A (AOD Competencies)

OHV requires staff in clinical positions to have the following competencies (or their equivalent). Where people do not already have these competencies, OHV will invest in the staff’s professional development by providing them through our registered training organisation (RTO).

The competencies required in the first 12 months of employment are:

  • CHCAOD001 – Work in an alcohol and other drugs context
  • CHCAOD004 – Assess needs of clients with alcohol and other drugs issues
  • CHCAOD006 – Provide interventions for people with alcohol and other drugs issues
  • CHCAOD009 – Develop and review individual alcohol and other drugs treatment plans
