About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a professional with an interest in First Nations Governance and public health to join our dynamic team. Working in either our National Office in Canberra or remotely, this role is ideal for a suitably qualified professional who is enthusiastic about public health and promoting a stronger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander vice inside PHAA. 

Working across the “First Nations Collective Co-Design Project” team, this part -time role supports our internal and external stakeholders to advance thinking discussions and actions with the purpose of influencing how PHAA operates in the future with stronger involvement from and by Indigenous Australians.

Salary package

The position will attract a part-time salary package of $41,745.60 inclusive of 11.5% superannuation.  

In addition, as a Not-for-Profit Employer, the PHAA can provide significant salary packaging benefits to the successful applicant. 

Main Duties:

  • Co-ordinate the meetings, communication and planning of the “Collective” team to advance the establishment of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collective for PHAA.
  • In particular take guidance and leadership from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Vice President for PHAA, working closely with the Elders, Interns, PHAA staff and office bearers and other contributors to the team.
  • Arrange meetings, minutes, liaise with stakeholders on matters relating to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collective for PHAA .
  • Contribute to Board, annual and other reports as required.
  • Help compile reports on progress and other communications regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collective for PHAA weekly newsletter and other publications.
  • Participate in and contribute to cross team meetings with our policy team and wider PHAA staff.
  • Assist PHAA branches and special interest groups with communications and engagement regarding the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collective.
  • Assist other team members as required.

Selection Criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualification(s) and/or experience in Indigenous governance, first nations public health, consultation processes, administrative and organisational issues or equivalent.
  • Excellent and demonstrable written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of parties.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment.
  • Ability to prioritise and self-manage competing timelines, together with taking initiative to identify new communications opportunities.
  • Understanding of and commitment to principles of workplace diversity and WHS requirements.

Preferred, but not essential

  • Prior experience communicating about public health or science to a range of different audiences.
  • Experience using Adobe suite or equivalent products, Skills in multimedia content development, such as photography, video recording, live streaming, and editing. 

This position will report to the CEO and to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Vice President for PHAA. You must have the right to work in Australia. There will be an expectation of being available to travel interstate to PHAA conferences, possibly one or two over the course of 2024/25 commonly running for two to three days.
