The Role
Phillip Island Nature Parks' Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre focuses on rehabilitating sick and injured seabirds and responding to environmental events such as pollution, wildfire and heatwaves. This hands-on role involves managing the centre, supervising team members, and ensuring wildlife programs meet industry standards. An evidence-based approach is used for wildlife rehabilitation, where the ecology and management of wild populations of birds and mammals is considered during the triage process.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Supervise and undertake the rehabilitation, health care and husbandry of sick and injured wildlife, with a primary focus on seabirds and threatened species, in accordance with relevant legislation, policies and best animal welfare standards.
- Coordinate the review, update and evaluation of internal governance procedures pertaining to the WRC, as per Phillip Island Nature Parks Animal Welfare Charter.
- Work collaboratively with stakeholder groups to promote understanding of wildlife welfare and compliance with the regulatory framework for wildlife rehabilitation in Victoria.
- Lead the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre’s induction, training and supervision of staff, students, interns and volunteers.
- Work with key staff to implement operational changes to realise the future directions for the WRC.
- Support financial sustainability through budget supervision, reporting (as required), supporting grant initiatives.
- Daily record management and data review, reporting and media supervision, as required.
- Maintain and supervise the external wildlife rescue stakeholders and partnerships, and MOU’s relevant to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
- Strengthen Wildlife Health Research by:
- Investigating and supporting research opportunities into wildlife health, welfare and rehabilitation practices.
- Ensuring staff are trained in diagnostic techniques to help strengthen animal health outcomes.
- Ensuring best practice biosecurity is implemented to the WRC.
- Reporting on emerging welfare and health risks.
Key Selection Criteria
- Excellent leadership, reporting and communication skills
- Experience in designing, coordinating, executing wildlife rehabilitation, and health programs.
- Proven ability to work with external wildlife stakeholders.
- Experience in managing captive or rehabilitated wildlife.
- Experience in wildlife health research, diagnostics or associated wildlife practices.
- Experience in wildlife emergency response.
To commence your journey with us, the following is required:
- Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing with 2 years post qualification experience or relevant experience in the related field.
- Working with Children Check
- A current Manual Drivers’ Licence
- First Aid Level II and CPR
