Australian Cancer Plan
Achieving equity in health outcomes between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians is the most significant ambition for the future of cancer care. The Australian Cancer Plan, developed by Cancer Australia, gives priority to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, strength and sovereignty in a health system that achieves equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by cancer. Collaboration and engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health organisations, health professionals, researchers and consumers underpins Cancer Australia’s work.
About the role
In an Executive Level 1 (Assistant Director) role within the within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cancer control section of Cancer Australia, you will lead a team implementing priority activities of the Australian Cancer Plan to improve equity and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by cancer. These include activities to build the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cancer workforce, strengthen health literacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and increase Indigenous-led research capacity within Australia.
You will lead a dynamic team working through collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health organisations, health professionals, researchers and communities affected by cancer.
At the EL1 level, you will often take responsibility for people management, leading a team by overseeing projects and service delivery, supporting staff, and developing capability. This involves an advanced understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health sector.
At the EL1 level, accountabilities may include:
- Strategically leading and managing a team responsible for a particular function, including establishing expectations, and scheduling and reviewing work.
- Managing resources to perform the role, such as exercising relevant HR and financial delegations.
- Supporting, mentoring and coaching members of the team to develop their capability.
- Responding to issues escalated by members of the team, exercising good judgement and addressing concerns.
- Collecting and analysing information and data to assess risks and opportunities.
- Produce and/or manage the preparation of briefs, strategies, reports and technical papers.
- Collaborating across teams within Cancer Australia to contribute to strategic agency-wide organisational projects and initiatives.
- Liaising and building strong relationships with external stakeholders.
- Assisting in the development and review of new and existing policies, procedures and templates.
- Providing advice to key internal and external stakeholder groups and negotiating the resolution of problems and issues.
- Overseeing the delivery of change and reform programs and contributing positively to change management across Cancer Australia.
