About the organisation

Nyamal Aboriginal Corporation was established in 2018 as the prescribed body corporate for the Nyamal native title holders. The core objectives of the Corporation are to:

  • Be a Registered Native Title Body Corporate and carry out its functions, including by holding and managing the native title and interests in trust for the Common Law Holders;
  • Advance and promote the wellbeing of Nyamal people and their families.
  • Take advantage of investment and commercial opportunities which arise in order generate assets, funds and opportunities for Nyamal people.
  • Provide environmental, social, economic and cultural benefits to Nyamal People.
  • Maintain, protect, promote and support the culture, traditions and customs; and
  • Support and provide education, training and employment for Nyamal People.

About the role

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO is responsible for implementing the Boards policies, decisions, and directions for the overall management of the Corporation’s operations and for supporting and promoting strategic development and growth.

A key requirement will be delivering on the Nyamal Strategic Plan and implementation of a new expanded organisation structure. The incumbent will provide leadership and direction for Management in administering the Corporation’s resources and liaise with relevant State and Federal government departments, mining and resources companies and other stakeholders with regard to relevant matters.

The CEO will give direction in sourcing and applying for funding from relevant government departments and the private sector. In addition, the CEO will lead the negotiations for ILUA’s, Heritage Protection Agreements and other agreements with Nyamal as the Registered Native Title Body Corporate.

About you

As the CEO of Nyamal Aboriginal Corporation, you will encompass strong leadership capabilities gained through your experience working in executive level positions. You will be culturally responsive and have a key understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. You will be a strong stakeholder manager, with key relational skills where you can work across multiple levels of government, while communicating with communities in WA.

As CEO, you will manage financial resources, safeguard corporation funds, ensure compliance with legislation and policy, allocate and maintain work tools, and responsibly manage assets. This role will report directly to the Board; experience in governance and working with a board of directors is required.

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Chief Executive and/or Senior Management roles, preferably in a First Nations Corporation and/or not-for-profit context.
  2. Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and the importance of fostering a culturally safe and inclusive workplace.
  3. Demonstrated track record of success as a decisive strategic leader, able to confidently make decisions to maintain and ensure the continued growth and success of the Corporation.
  4. Prior experience successfully applying high-level negotiation and liaison skills at Board, management and key stakeholder level.
  5. Demonstrated skills in the development and implementation of strategic and operational plans, on time and within budget.
  6. Demonstrated commercial and financial acumen including financial budgeting and reporting, financial analysis, expenditure management and financial acquittals
