Play a pivotal role in supporting First Nations people with disability in the role of SARU's Deadly First Nations Self Advocacy Project Worker.

In this role you will work with the Deadly First Nations Shout Out Self Advocacy Group on the Building a Strong Foundation ILC Project.

This role is 2 days (15.2 hours) per week, paid at the SCHADS Award Level 6 with above award conditions and salary packaging available.

About Self Advocacy Groups

The Self Advocacy movement is a civil rights movement led for and by people with disability that dates back to the 1960's. The self advocacy movement lives by the saying ‘nothing about us without us’.

Self Advocacy Groups are run by and for people with disability who work together to make sure they have the same rights, choices, and opportunities as everyone else in the community.

About Deadly First Nations Shout Out Self Advocacy Group

Deadly First Nations Shout Out Group ('The Deadlys') is a Self Advocacy Group run by and for First Nations people with disability. Members are Self Advocates who work on issues that impact them. The Deadlys like to yarn with peers, connect to their community and keep their culture strong. Group activities are organised by group members.

Purpose of SARU's Building a Strong Foundation ILC Project:

The Building a Strong Foundation project is a 3-year project that will develop and action a Self Advocacy Community Engagement strategy to support six diverse Self Advocacy groups, including urban & regional groups, a First Nations group & 2 LGBTIQA+ groups, to thrive.

The strategy will include initial benchmarking of each group’s activities, membership, and community reach and build on current strengths and connections to support each groups development. The strategy could include community consultations and outreach, resource development and peer to peer skill sharing.

The project will also develop knowledge that can support the development of a sustainable group self-advocacy model that acknowledges intersectionality and promotes cultural safety amid the current risks to independent Self Advocacy Groups.

This project is funded by an ILC grant from the Department of Social Services.

About the job:

The Deadly First Nations Project Worker will work with the Deadly First Nations Shout Out Self Advocacy group to:

  • Run and strengthen their Self Advocacy Group
  • Build connection to culture and community
  • Build a shared responsibility for the group between group members
  • Develop and action Deadly First Nations Shout Out Group’s Self Advocacy community engagement plan
  • Build data and knowledge that helps self advocacy groups to be more effective in their role

The Project Worker will work as part of a small team of ILC Project Workers, supporting collaboration and information sharing between the six Self Advocacy groups engaged on this project.
