About Humanists Victoria

Humanists Victoria is part of an international network of Humanist organisations working since the 1950s towards building a society where everyone can lead an ethical, safe and fulfilling life. We advocate for a more compassionate, ethical and just world, guided by science and reason.

We do this through a range of campaigns and initiatives focusing on critical issues including human rights, indigenous self-determination, climate change and wealth inequality. We also build partnerships and actively support community organisations pursuing our shared values.

Practical matters

The present voluntary Secretary position becomes vacant in late November 2024 and recruitment of a new Secretary has commenced in order to achieve a smooth transition. The Chairperson and retiring Secretary will provide guidance and support over a transition period.

Humanists Victoria is governed by a Committee of seven voluntary members and currently meets bimonthly on Tuesday mornings at Balwyn library. Much of the secretarial task can be performed from home.

The Committee oversees development of strategies and projects, governance of the organisation, administration of finances and compliance with relevant statutory laws and regulations.

The role

The secretary works closely with the Treasurer and President ensuring effective governance of the organisation.

Your key duties and responsibilities will include all or part of:

  • Ensure the timely preparation and lodgement of statutory reporting requirements and other formal reports.
  • Ensure effective procedures and policies are in place, and that documentation of both policies and procedures is up to date.
  • Assist with management of electronic and paper correspondence to ensure the smooth functioning and co-operation of the Committee.
  • Maintain the membership database.
  • Ensure on-line accounts (such as web mail, TidyHQ, MailChimp, G-Drive, Facebook etc) are being managed by appropriate Committee members and volunteers.
  • Support the Chairperson and Community Coordinator in ways to be agreed, including possible preparation of agendas and minute-taking.

Desirable Skills, Personal Qualities and Experience

  • Acceptance of humanist values is essential.
  • Secretarial or governance experience.
  • A collaborative approach to Committee administration.
