About the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research Program:

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research Program, provide support and leadership to research involving First Nations Australians. The program supports researchers explore the capacity for their work to benefit the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The program is principally responsible for coordination of a suite of research, workforce development, communication and governance strategies. Consultation, engagement, partnership and co-design with stakeholders and regional champions, form a large part of our work.

Role Purpose / Responsibilities:

This position reports to the Manager for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research. This position is responsible for working cohesively as part of a cross institutional, multi-sectorial, and multi-disciplinary team to co-design, plan, coordinate, deliver, evaluate, and report activities relating to the “Communication for Mental Health” project.

The successful candidate is required to:

  • Identify, engage, consult, meet and communicate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders and champions from the community, health service, research and policy sectors of Queensland;
  • Work with key stakeholders to identify training needs and preferences to form the basis of a communication training package for mental health clinicians working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing mental health services of Queensland;
  • Co-design, develop, deliver and evaluate a training experience for mental health clinicians of the public hospital and health service sector of Queensland; a training experience that supports mental health clinicians to a) be more sensitive to, b) better communicate with, and c) provide an enhanced experience for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander consumers, their family and carers accessing mental health services of Queensland;
  • Prepare project reports and track milestones;
  • Ensure work practices comply with the requirements of the Work Health and Safety Act, related legislative requirements and the Institute’s OH&S policies and procedures.

About you:

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant will possess:

  • Experience operating at an executive level to support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander equity, leadership and self-determination;
  • High level understanding and experience of the principles underlying cultural responsivity/capability and with respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of being, knowing and doing;
  • Highly developed skills and experience in the development, delivery and evaluation of cultural responsivity/capability training;
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons, their families and communities;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Highly developed project management skills;
  • An ability to work autonomously to deliver outputs on time and to an agreed standard;
  • An ability to work in a supportive manner as part of a small team who respect and appreciate diversity, individuality and integrity and who share responsibility for program success.

Remuneration:

Salary range is $112,001 to $120,769 FTE ($67,200 to $72,461 - 0.6FTE) p.a. plus super, plus very attractive salary packaging. This is a part-time 0.6FTE appointment until 31 December 2026.
