  • Level: Level 5 Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award $97,377 to $101,787(depending on experience), plus leave loading and superannuation. Salary sacrificing is available.
  • Reports to: Children and Youth Counselling Team Leader
  • Contract: 0.8 FTE (equivalent to 4 days per week), 2-year contract ending 31 December 2026. Flexible and out of hours work may be required.

Role Purpose

Our Children and Youth Counselling Team supports individuals, families, and communities from refugee backgrounds to heal, belong, thrive, and restore their sense of justice. The primary purpose of this role is to strengthen family responses to trauma including intergenerational trauma, collective traumatic grief and the negative consequences of conflict and social exclusion. The focus of this role will be to:

  • Plan, coordinate and deliver group and community-based healing processes with children aged 5- 12 years and their carers that are developmentally appropriate and encompass mind, body and spirit; Role Purpose Our Vision Our Values
  • Utilise a collaborative approach and work alongside peers within your team and across the organisation as well as children, their carers and the community;
  • Maintain and develop positive and productive relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including with schools.

Character

We are looking for an experienced child and family focused practitioner who enjoys group facilitation in community settings. This role requires someone who is passionate about supporting people from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds in their recovery journey from trauma to healing and thriving.

We are looking for someone who can create a welcoming, culturally safe and engaging atmosphere to be able to build rapport and appropriately engage with children and carers to understand their recovery needs. You will be compassionate, adaptable and courageous in providing group and community-based interventions that support safety, healing and thriving.

You will build strong, trusting relationships with families and understand their vision for a better future. You will identify natural leaders amongst refugee families and support their connection to the service and other supports available to families in need. You will be compassionate and patient, understanding the challenges of children, their families and communities.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate group work activities that achieve outcomes related to healing, belonging, thriving and justice. This includes group work facilitation with:
    • Children aged 5-12 years of age using engaging and developmentally appropriate activities and processes, such as therapeutic art, play or other expressive modalities,
    • Parents/Carers using a culturally and trauma responsive approach
  • Delivery includes: community engagement, planning, coordination and facilitation of group sessions and programs. This includes facilitating the participation of carers and children (invitation, welcome, coordination of transport and childcare as required, and in-between group session follow-up);
  • Alongside participants, co-design, deliver and evaluate child and family focused group interventions which promote trauma recovery and strengthen the confidence and capacity of family members in their relationships and family roles. This may include group work interventions with children together with their parents/carers;
  • Provide group-based psycho-education to families regarding the impact of refugee-related trauma, incorporating an understanding of development and life stages;
  • Deliver appropriate group participant related advocacy and referral which supports healing and the opportunity for families to thrive and belong in the Australian community;
  • Work collaboratively with the system that sits alongside children and their families, including community leaders, community agencies, schools and other stakeholders;
  • Provide support to interpreters and bicultural peer workers who are casually engaged to Character Responsibilities support the delivery of groupwork and other community-based activities;
  • Ensure quality service delivery, including accountability with contractual requirements. This includes the writing of individual and group participant case notes and documentation of interventions delivered;
  • Abide by the vision and values of QPASTT, including our Code of Conduct as well as the policies and procedures of the organisation;
  • Support research and evaluation initiatives of the organisation.

Requirements

  • Ability to apply QPASTT’s healing, belonging, thriving and justice framework to group and community initiatives;
  • Degree level qualifications and/or experience in a relevant human service area related to children and family wellbeing (overseas experience will be assessed), such as social work, psychology, community development, occupational therapy, family work, expressive therapies, human services etc.;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the refugee experience, including settlement, trauma recovery frameworks and the impact on wellbeing;
  • Experience and knowledge in the space of childhood development, attachment and the impact of trauma upon children and parenting/caregiving and child-parent/carer relationships;
  • Experience in and ability to lead planning, delivery and evaluation of therapeutic group work programs with children aged 5-12 years, and their families;
  • Ability to work in partnership with communities and other service providers to develop innovative strategies for group work and community engagement;
  • Ability to undertake individual participant support as needed using a trauma-informed lens to address the barriers to health, education, employment and well-being;
  • High level of communication and interpersonal skills, including written and oral, consultation, negotiation, advocacy, presentation and liaison;
  • Demonstrated professionalism within the workplace, including ethical decision making; exhibiting reliability and initiative; and contributing to a diverse workplace culture of respect and flexibility;
  • Desirable – lived refugee experience;
  • Desirable – Experience working with individuals and families from refugee and/or multicultural backgrounds.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Current Positive Notice Blue Card and provision of an annual federal police check;
  2. Current Queensland C Class driver’s license;
  3. Flexibility to work out of standard hours;
  4. Travel to other office locations in Queensland;
  5. Eligibility to work in Australia;
  6. The period of probation will be six months.
