Role Purpose
The Peace Leadership Project Officer will be compassionate and courageous in fostering a sense of belonging and healing through connections, skill building and mentoring support to empower young people and communities impacted by war and conflict. Primarily the role focuses on young people from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds.
The purpose of this role is to:
- Ensure mechanisms are in place (new or existing) to engage key stakeholders to deliver Peace Leadership training, mentorship and support for youth who are passionate about conflict transformation and peace building
- Connect with young people to create trusting and meaningful relationships to empower young people to build a sense of belonging to family, community, culture and place.
- Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders to enable the Project to act as a bridge between youth, groups and communities creating opportunities for young people and local communities to thrive.
- Support and facilitate interfacing between participating young people and QPASTT advocacy and Community Partnership teams to inform our Sector Development activities
- Coordinate and implement activities including evaluation activities to ensure meaningful outcomes for communities.

You will possess the ability to quickly build rapport and engage young people; have an understanding of the strengths they possess and the challenges they face; and work alongside young people to support them to thrive in their communities and the wider Australian community.

Responsibilities
- Co-develop and co-deliver activities ensuring effective engagement, support and outcomes are achieved;
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with young people, their families and community;
- Coordinate and deliver youth training and mentorship under the Peace Leadership Program and providing safe, youth-centred and developmentally appropriate support;
- Develop and co-create initiatives with young people, their families and communities which are accessible, trauma informed and culturally sensitive to the needs of survivors of torture and trauma;
- Identify emerging issues arising from local and international crisis situations and develop appropriate response strategies in collaboration with young people and families;
- Deliver appropriate advocacy which supports healing and the opportunity to thrive and belong in the Australian community;
- Engage with and manage risks with participants and families experiencing complex and/or crisis presentations in accordance with organisational processes and supports;
- Build and foster collaborative partnerships with family members, community members and other agencies;
- Ensure quality service delivery including accountability with contractual and organisational requirements. This includes the writing of workshop materials, reports and presentations.
- Ability to abide by the vision and values of QPASTT including our Code of Conduct as well as the policies and procedures of the organisation;
- Support research and evaluation initiatives of the organisation.
Requirements
We are looking for a young person from refugee backgrounds with relevant experience to apply.
- Degree level qualifications in Social Work, Youth Work, Education, Psychology, Human Services, or related area of expertise.
- Demonstrated experience working with young people, particularly in the context of conflict resolution or conflict transformation, social cohesion and/or peacebuilding.
- Demonstrated experience in coordinating, delivering and evaluating community based projects.
- Capacity to understand and work with marginalised young people, or those who are at risk of being marginalised, creating innovative responses.
- Ability to respond to varying needs of young people in both a peer and community setting and be responsive to needs in creating and/or implementing interventions.
- Understanding that the young person is part of a family and community and working to support the support the young person to be healthy, belong and thrive within those systems.
- A commitment to utilising recovery frameworks and implementing the QPASTT Youth Strategic Plan, applying the core values of healing, belonging, thriving and justice.
- Experience in, and ability to, work in partnership with young people and service providers to develop innovative strategies for intervention and support such as group work and events.
Conditions of Employment
- Current Positive Notice Blue Card and provision of an annual federal police check.
- Current Queensland C Class driver’s licence.
- Occasional out of hours work and travel to other QPASTT offices (Brisbane, Ipswich and Logan).
- The period of probation will be six months.
