Proven experience in educational strategy, accreditation processes, and governance are essential for this role.

About RANZCO

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) is the medical college responsible for the training and professional development of ophthalmologists in Australia and New Zealand. RANZCO is the only specialist medical college accredited to train ophthalmologists. We’re a membership organisation of 42 staff, located adjacent to Central station.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)

The RAP commits RANZCO to activities that seek to achieve equity in access and health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; continue to build collaborative partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the health sector; build on our existing commitment to increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ophthalmologists in Australia; and will improve and enhance our organisation’s cultural safety practices.

The Role

The role actively supports the work of the RANZCO Education Committee, overseeing the implementation of RANZCO’s educational strategy in alignment with the strategic plan, ensuring programs meet external accreditation standards, and maintaining an effective governance structure. Key accountabilities and responsibilities include:

1. Strategy and Governance

  • Develop and implement RANZCO’s educational strategy in line with the strategic plan, maintaining an effective governance structure for educational programs.

2. Accreditation and Standards

  • Ensure education programs meet external accreditation standards. Ratify accreditation decisions for training sites and posts and decisions on Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMG) assessments.

3. Curriculum and Assessment

  • Approve curriculum and program frameworks, assessment programs, and methods.
  • Ensure effective, evidence-based teaching and learning methods are used.

4. Program Implementation and Improvement

  • Support the effective implementation of educational programs, ensuring evidence-based initiatives to improve programs.

Time commitment

  • Attendance at two meetings per year of approximately two-hours duration by videoconference.
  • The role will require responding to issues between meetings, via email or the committee collaboration hub, typically once or twice per month.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Postgraduate degree in education, health education, education leadership and/or another relevant field.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in educational strategy development, governance, and accreditation processes.
  • Strong background in curriculum development, assessment methods, and effective teaching approaches.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering outcomes and influencing change through effective communication, negotiation, and influencing.
  • Developing effective working relationships with fellow members of committees or working groups and stakeholders.
