In Victoria, The Flying Doctor has an extensive patient transport operation by air and road, complemented by a range of mobile and fixed primary health services, such as dental, optical, mental health, GP clinics, speech therapy and a growing number of digital health technologies.

The role:

Mobile Patient Care (MPC) provides clinical care for people travelling from home to hospital, hospital to hospital and hospital to home, as well as transport to and from specialist clinics.

The role of Registered Critical Care Nurse (Flight/Mobile Transport Specialist) is based out of our Essendon Hanger and provides high quality patient care and treatment during the aeromedical and road transport of patients with a wide variety of medical conditions across Victoria and Australia, in accordance with Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Mobile Patient Care (MPC) policies, procedures, and Non-Emergency Patient Transport Regulations and Clinical Practice Protocols

Tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Performing patient assessment, intervention and assess the effectiveness of any intervention in accordance with all RFDS policies and procedures, NEPT regulations and Clinical Practice Protocols within your scope of practice.
  • Transporting High, Medium, and Low acuity patients by road and air to and from rural and metropolitan locations across Victoria and Australia.
  • Performing independently and problem solve within established policies and procedures as well as work collaboratively with other team members when required.
  • Demonstrating proficiency in written and verbal communication when delivering patient hand over to other health care professionals and completing patient care records
  • Making confident decisions in regards to patient assessment, care and interventions as required prior to patient pick up and during patient transfer.
  • Driving company vehicles in a safe and courteous manner, obeying all road rules with patient safety and comfort paramount.
  • Participating in, promoting and contributing to Quality Assurance activities RFDSMPC to continually improve performance in patient care and service delivery.

Qualifications and experience required:

  • Bachelor of Nursing (Midwifery qualification desirable)
  • Graduate Certificate in Critical Care
  • Registered as a Nurse with AHPRA
  • ALS Competency (And provide re-accreditation evidence annually)
  • Minimum of three years working in a critical care environment (Emergency Department/Intensive Care Unit)
  • Graduate Certificate of Aeromedical Retrieval - or similar is desirable
  • Current Police and Working with Children's check.
  • Current Victorian Drivers Licence with no restrictions
  • Current with all required vaccinations as per RFDS and Air Ambulance Victoria policy.
  • Previous aeromedical or pre-hospital experience desirable.

Casual positions are available with shifts Monday - Friday between 07:00 and 21:00. Occasional weekend work may be required dependent on operational demand.

Mandatory vaccination policy:

As part of the application process, you will be required to provide evidence of the following vaccinations:

  • Hepatitis B

  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella
  • Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis
  • Annual Influenza
  • COVID-19 (2 vaccinations + booster)
