Committee Members (Voluntary) - Remote / Work from Home

Rights Information & Advocacy Centre Incorporated.

We are keen to recruit people from regional Victoria in communities where we operate but we are also open to people from Melbourne with relevant skills.

About Us

The Rights, Information, and Advocacy Centre (RIAC) is a non-profit community organisation committed to building the capacity and wellbeing of individuals, families, carers and communities through advocacy, access, and support services. RIAC works across 22 Local Government Areas throughout central and north-western regional Victoria and parts of southern New South Wales on the lands of the First Nations people, the Djaara, Yorta Yorta, Wurundjeri, Ladji Ladji, Barkinji, Wadawurrung, Bangerang, and Taungurung with offices in Bendigo, Geelong, Shepparton, and Mildura.

RIAC’s work advocating for the human rights of people with disabilities involves providing clients with advice and support based on an empowerment model grounded in the community.

About the Opportunity

We are seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced people for volunteer appointment to the three RIAC Board Committees:

  • Finance and Audit Committee - FAC (3 positions)
  • Governance Committee – GovCo (2 positions)
  • Risk & Strategy Committee – R&SC (2 positions)

Appointments are for a two-year (renewable) period commencing from April 2024.

The Committees are established under terms of reference set by the RIAC Board of Directors and play an integral role in the overall decision-making obligations of the Board. Each Committee currently comprises two RIAC Directors and meets a minimum of 4 times per year. RIAC is seeking additional independent members to broaden the membership of the Committees.

  • The FAC provides independent assurance and advice on accounting, financial management, internal controls and associated risk management matters.
  • The GovCo is focused on ensuring RIAC’s policies, procedures and culture support high quality accountable and effective governance.
  • The R&SC is focused on the functioning, accountability and effectiveness of RIAC’s risk tolerances, risk management and strategic planning.

RIAC’s Board and Committee are made up of volunteers and therefore members of the Committees are not remunerated.

RIAC is a regional organisation based in Victoria, with a geographically dispersed Board, and its Committees meet online, therefore we are flexible about the location of members, though our preference is to recruit members from our service catchment areas.

About You

RIAC prefers to recruit people with lived experience of disability as committee members.

Independent Members must have skills, knowledge and experience relevant to the functions of the committees, such as finance, budgeting and audit (FAC), governance and policies (GovCo) and risk or strategy (R&SC).

Experience as a member of a board or a committee in the community sector, and a demonstrated ability to be strategic and solutions focussed is highly desirable.
