About the Opportunity

The General Manager, Lived Experience Leadership and Advocacy supports an organisational culture that embodies Flourish Australia’s values and ethics, respectfully engages people with lived experience of a mental health issue across the organisation, and leads co-production and advocacy activities to embed lived experience perspectives, leadership and governance across Flourish Australia.

Supporting the organisation’s commitment to human rights and to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the General Manager will guide improvements in the services, support and inclusion available to people with lived experience through the use of leadership, advocacy, influence, knowledge, networking, continuous learning and persistence, internally and externally.

The position works with the Senior Leadership Team to develop systems and processes that ensure people using Flourish Australia’s services are fully involved in the decisions affecting them and in the processes of determining the services they require.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have acquired a high level of skill, expertise, and personal attributes required to effectively perform the inherent requirements of this position description and to achieve the performance agreement agreed with the Chief Executive Officer.

As the General Manager, Lived Experience Leadership and Advocacy, you will:

  • Have strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and manage relationships at all levels of the organisation, including with staff at remote locations.
  • Think laterally and contribute to a significant degree at high-level meetings
  • Possess strong problem solving and creative skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
  • Help embed human rights, equity and diversity principles in all aspects of the organisation to meet the needs of a complex and diverse society.
  • Have the ability to work effectively as an advisor to the CEO, the Flourish Australia Board (as required), the SLT, managers and staff at all levels
  • Respectfully challenge the status quo with a view to improving services

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Identifies as a someone with a personal lived experience of a mental health issue and recovery.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent senior experience/standing in the mental health sector.
  • Demonstrated experience in being an influential and strategic thinker, analysing situations, and developing innovative and creative solutions.
  • Demonstrated capacity to use personal lived experience strategically to lead, influence and negotiate agreements, and achieve satisfactory outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying, influencing and delivering significant organisational and systemic changes to language, structures, systems and/or practices to achieve positive outcomes and sustainable improvements focused on human rights, social justice and equity.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work at the senior management level, reporting directly to the CEO and operating as a peer with other senior managers.
