Living Languages supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to strengthen their languages, through hands-on, grassroots training.

We work with individuals, family groups, communities, language centres, schools and other organisations who request our support. Together, we tailor programs to help them reach their language goals, their way. We work with people at all stages of their language journeys, whether they’re just starting or have been working with language for years, from language learners to fluent speakers. And we work with all languages, from sleeping to strong.

The Living Languages team works from their home offices, connecting regularly via Teams/Zoom, with I.C.T and Professional Development support.

The role

Living Languages is looking for inspiring and adaptable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to join our team, helping organise, develop and deliver training, advice and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples around the country. You will work from home with regular travel away.

Duties

Language Trainers provide training, support and advice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people engaged in or just beginning language work.

  • Support the development and delivery of training to participants – face to face and online.
  • Assist in developing training resources.
  • Maintain administrative records, training reports and databases.
  • Contribute to social media and other communications.
  • Other duties as required.

Essential skills and experience

  • Experience working with Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, in at least one of the following areas (please address all that apply to you):
    1. Community-based language activities,
    2. Language teaching or training (face-to-face or online) or
    3. Language documentation/research, reclamation, revitalisation or maintenance.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with excellent organisational skills.
  • Able to engage and work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills such as public speaking, cross-cultural communication and meeting/training facilitation.
  • Confident in using computers, online video platforms and Microsoft programs like Word, PowerPoint and Outlook (use of SharePoint and Teams also an advantage).
  • Ability to work from home as well as travel for up to ten days at a time.

Desirable skills and knowledge: Knowledge and understanding of the Linguistics of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages (syntax, morphology, phonology, phonetics and sociolinguistics).

Other requirements

  • A current Australian Driver’s License (or willingness to apply)
  • You are required to hold a National Police Clearance (issued within three months of your employment agreement).

Hours of work

  • Three days a week (0.6 FTE) additional hours when travelling.
  • Fixed term contracts commencing May 2024 – June 30, 2025 subject to funding.

Remuneration

  • Will be determined based on successful applicants’ skills and experience.
  • FTE Salary Range: $71,412 to $87,556 per annum plus superannuation.
  • Salary packaging.
