About the Role

The Finance Officer manages all financial operations, including bookkeeping, payroll, reporting and compliance. As the sole finance member, key responsibilities include; accounts payable and receivable, financial reporting, budget support, cash flow analysis and liaising with financial advisors. The Finance Officer also provides guidance to staff and student representatives on finance-related queries and supports RUSU’s governance and transparency requirements.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Expertise in managing financial operations, including accounts payable/receivable, reconciliations, and compliance with financial procedures, along with strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven experience in preparing financial reports, cash flow projections, and coordinating audits, ensuring accountability, transparency and compliance with statutory obligations.
  • Proficiency in overseeing payroll processes, including timesheet processing, wage payments, payroll reconciliations, and a comprehensive understanding of current accounting and payroll standards and legislation.
  • Advanced skills in financial software, including MYOB and Excel, for developing financial models, budget reports, and managing EFT banking, along with the ability to mentor and guide staff and student leaders in financial management.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills to effectively liaise with staff, student representatives and external stakeholders, combined with a genuine interest in working with young people in a student union context.

Qualifications & Key Requirements

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in business/finance or related fields (minimum degree level) with at least four years of relevant experience in a finance/accounting role, preferably in the community/education sector.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience undertaking payroll of comparable size to RUSU.
  • A valid Working with Children Check and successful police and probity check.
