About Safe Places for Children
Safe Places for Children provides young people at risk with intensive therapeutic support and supervision in a homely and welcoming residential care setting. Since opening our doors in 2006, we have made a difference in the lives of more than 1800 young people ranging in age from young children to 18 years, who exhibit complex emotional and behavioural problems. Our approach is based on small, stable and consistent teams that build trust with the young person, stabilise their behaviours and give them a sense of hope and direction. About the role
Both youth workers and case managers at Safe Places undertake frontline shifts caring for young people and deliver all the duties below.
- Working one-on-one with young people, you will be responsible for their day-to-day care, providing practical and emotional support in accordance with our therapeutic programs and individually tailored care maps
- As part of a tight-knit and supportive team, you will work together to help the young person develop social and life skills, building their confidence, self-respect and independence
- When on shift, you will be responsible for maintaining a comfortable and safe home environment, with a high standard of care and cleanliness
- You will face challenging, pain-based behaviours such as verbal and physical aggression, due to the trauma, abuse or neglect the young person has experienced and guide the young person to more positive coping strategies
- Where required, you will help to re-engage the young person with appropriate educational providers, liaise with health services and transition the young person into socially inclusive activities
- To guide you in your role, you will have access to therapeutic practice professionals, case clinics, regular formal supervisions with your supervisor, 24-hour on-call advice and a free external counselling service
Essential skills, knowledge and attributes
- Experience working with challenging behaviours such as verbal and physical aggression
- Understanding of case management model
- Computer-literate and the ability to complete all reports via Safe Places web-based systems
- Ability to do shift work set at five (5) shifts a fortnight for full-time staff, including sleepovers
- Resilience, patience and confidence, together with a mature outlook
- Strong problem-solving, crisis management and interpersonal communication skills
- Full Australian driver’s licence
No card, no start from 31 August 2020

Desirable skills, knowledge and attributes
- Knowledge of the child protection sector and issues facing children in out-of-home care
- Qualifications in youth work, community services, disability or a related field
- Experience working with Indigenous young people, CALD backgrounds, disabilities and in the health sector or in mental health-related roles is highly desirable
