Day-Day Duties:
Peer Workers purposefully draw on their lived experience of mental ill-health and recovery to foster hope, establish purposeful connections, and empower others in their recovery. Core duties and responsibilities of a peer support worker at SANE include:
- Engage with participants to develop trusting and professional relationships that respect worker/participant boundaries to create a safe environment to facilitate recovery focussed supports
- Foster and promote opportunities for participants to learn about mental health, recovery, available services and resources to deepen their knowledge, skills and recovery resources.
- Assist participants navigate mental health and community services, advocating where appropriate and empowering participants to move towards self-management.
- Promote capacity and skill building, connections with family, friends and support participants to building their capacity to engage in personal interests and to meaningfully contribute and participate in their community.
- Provide emotional support to participants by constructively sharing insights and lessons learnt through your own lived experience i.e. role model your journey of recovery to instil hope in the participant.
- Utilise and draw upon your understanding in strength-based, recovery orientated models of care to assist participants identify their strengths and values and achieve their recovery goals.
- Work in accordance with SANE’s Model of Care, Scope of Practice, Clinical Governance Framework and policies and procedures,
- Respond and escalate risk and safety concerns in accordance with SANE’s incident and risk management policies and procedures.
- Participate in Peer led external individual supervision sessions and Community of Practice sessions
- Reflect and utilise feedback/discussions to apply self-reflection skills whilst supporting participants to ensure best practice.
Experience/Qualifications:
- A minimum Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, Intentional Peer Support (Lived Experience) - Essential
- Previous experience in Mental Health Peer Work, peer facilitation or lived experience workforce roles for a minimum of 1-2 years - Essential
- Personal lived experience of mental health concerns, service use and recovery, and a willingness to share your story purposefully to support the mental health of others.
- A willingness to complete training in ASIST, Trauma Informed Care, Safe Story Telling and Intentional Peer Support.
- Experience working in telephone based or online environments, in particular tele-web service delivery in mental health services.
