SA Unions Young Workers’ Centre

  • Proactive outreach, educating young workers on workplace matters, their workplace industrial and safety rights.
  • Youth outreach opportunities to effectively advocate for young workers, by connecting young workers with their unions, employers, and other stakeholders.
  • Building up the Young Workers’ Network to educate, and build community around workplace issues.

Role Description

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Education & Outreach Organiser to join our newly established Young Workers’ Centre.

The successful candidate will have extensive practical experience in workplaces and health and safety, with a strong focus on developing and delivering high-impact educational programmes to high school students. The role will also involve expanding our course offerings to TAFE, VET and University students.

Scope of the role

The Young Workers’ Centre Outreach Organiser will be employed by SA Unions full time on a two year contract (aligned with grant funding), There is potential for ongoing employment dependant on ongoing funding.

Duties may include:

  • Develop and deliver engaging WHS and workplace rights educational programmes tailored to high school students.
    • Expand and adapt the high school programme for TAFE and VET students, addressing their specific needs and challenges.
    • Work closely with schools, TAFE, and VET institutions to schedule and coordinate programme delivery.
    • Evaluate programme effectiveness and make continuous improvements based on feedback and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the Content & Information Officer to create relevant and up-to-date educational materials.
  • Conduct interactive workshops and training sessions that effectively communicate WHS principles and workplace rights.
  • Maintain engagement with the young workers’ network to establish
  • Stay informed about the latest developments in WHS and workplace rights to ensure the accuracy and relevance of educational content.
  • Complete and present engaging reports on their projects.

Essential Skills & experience

  • Extensive practical experience in workplace advocacy settings, particularly in health and safety.
  • Strong understanding of WHS principles and workplace rights.
  • Proven experience in developing and delivering educational or training programmes.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage and inspire.
  • Strong organisational and relationship management skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the relationship between organising, campaigning, union power, and achieving change.
  • Demonstrated commitment to union values.

Desirable Skills & experience

  • Working knowledge of the Federal and State Fair Work Acts and relevant workplace law and legislation.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver projects.
  • Experience working for a trade union or in an in-house role with exposure to work health safety issues.
  • Experience with organising and advocating for young people.
  • Knowledge of Labour Council and ACTU structures and activities.
  • Familiarity with union coverage and priorities in South Australia.

Licenses & Permits

  • Applicants will be required to hold a current driving license
  • Applicants must hold or be able to hold a Working with Children Check (WWCC).
