SharingStories Foundation (SharingStories) is a not-for-profit organisation that supports First Nations communities to maintain and share cultures, languages and knowledges. We listen to and work with First Nations Community partners across Australia, building long-term and trusted relationships. Together they invent, adapt and adopt new ways to record and creatively interpret cultural knowledge using a range of media, art forms and platforms.

This is an exciting time to join the SharingStories Board, as it embarks on its biggest growth and transformation in 12 years with a new First Nations Board Chair, First Nations CEO and First Nations majority-led leadership team.

About this opportunity

SharingStories programs are co-designed with, and led by, senior Cultural Custodians, and include digital storytelling and cultural mapping programs, films, production of interactive books, immersive exhibitions, interactive display panels, and education resources that embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island perspectives across the Australian Curriculum.

The role of the Board is to provide overall strategic guidance for SharingStories and effective oversight to ensure the enactment of long-term goals. In 2024, SharingStories is seeking new board directors to drive the implementation of their new 2025 Strategic Plan.

SharingStories Board is a skills-mix board, and vacancies have arisen for new directors with philanthropy, entrepreneurship, financial management and public relations expertise to contribute to our strategic vision as a Non-Executive Director of SharingStories.

We strive to have a rich, diverse workforce. We strongly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples with demonstrated lived experience of working with and in Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities to apply.

This is a volunteer position and we are seeking Non-Executive Directors who display integrity, independence and ethics and who are collaborative and courageous.

• Board meetings are held during business hours, four times per year, typically three online and one face to face.
• Board finance subcommittee meet quarterly.
• This is a volunteer (unpaid) position.
• Travel and other agreed expenses are covered by SharingStories Foundation.
• Successful applicants will be required to complete a Police check.

Essential selection criteria

• Understanding of the responsibilities of a Non-Executive Director, including knowledge of the legal, ethical, and financial responsibilities of Board members.
• Legal and compliance – the board’s responsibility involves overseeing compliance with numerous laws as well as understanding the individual director’s legal duties and responsibilities.
• Strategic expertise – the ability to review and oversee the strategy through constructive questioning and suggestion and contribute to the effective decision making of the board.
• Accounting and finance – the ability to read and comprehend the company’s accounts and financial reports presented to the board.
• Risk Management – experience in managing areas of significant risk to the organisation.
• Leadership - strategic, analytical and collaborative communicator.

Highly Desirable skills and expertise:

• Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person or have extensive experience of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• A passion and strong understanding of the impacts of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Sector knowledge – relevant experience in similar organisations or sectors, including creative arts, cultural institutions or education.
• Media, marketing, brand, and communications expertise.
• Public sector policy and government relations
