Owned by St John of God Health Care, St John of God Social Outreach provides significant care and relief for people experiencing disadvantage throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region, particularly in areas where gaps in health and wellbeing services have been identified. Social Outreach services are available to all members of the community and can be accessed free of charge or at minimal cost.

St John of God Social Outreach Horizon House Warrnambool provides support for young people aged 16-22 years who are in need of long term accommodation and care to enable them to access education, training and employment opportunities. Our focus is on giving them the stability, life-skills and support they need to achieve their individual goals and ultimately, make the transition to independent living.

THE POSITION

We are currently seeking empathetic and reliable Youth Residential Carers to join our friendly and committed team at our Warrnambool – location.

Are you someone with ability to engage positively with young people and who enjoys variety working collaboratively with many external services that support young people? Can you respond with quick and logical thinking during a crisis or conflict?

Our Youth Residential Carers work in a residential setting with young people to support them to be their best selves, helping them learn, grow and develop with autonomy to make positive choices for their future. This also involves coordinating, developing and implementing our Independent Life Skills Programmes so the needs of young people are met throughout their stay at Horizon House.

Applicants with previous residential experience who have a sound knowledge of a trauma informed approach to working with young people are encouraged to apply.

To be considered applicants must be available to work shifts across 7 days of the week, including weekends and public holidays on a rotating roster. Shifts will also include residential sleep overs.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE:

  • A willingness and capacity to embrace the Mission and Values of St John of God Health Care.
  • Minimum Certificate IV (or working towards) in Youth Work or similar.
  • Extensive experience in an area related to youth work and/or case management.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of the special needs of adolescents and trauma-informed care together with recent relevant experience working with at-risk young people is essential.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Privacy Legislation and Occupational, Health & Safety Act Regulations.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • Adhere to pre-employment immunisation policy and possession of a current:
    • Unrestricted State Driver’s License,
    • First Aid Certificate and
    • Victorian Working with Children Card
  • Commitment to and participation in ongoing development on skills and knowledge in working within a therapeutic service model.
