The Role

The Regional Outreach Counsellor/Project Officer will provide a wide range of therapeutic interventions for survivors of refugee trauma and/or torture settling in the Hunter and Central Coast. This will form 50% of their workload. They will also liaise with refugee communities and other relevant stakeholders to develop and implement community development activities. It is expected that community development and group work will make up approximately 30% of the workload while the remaining 20% will be taken by provision of training and research.

The successful applicant will be part of a multicultural and multi-disciplinary team.

Skills and Qualifications Required

Essential:

  1. Tertiary qualifications in Health, Welfare, Social Work, Psychology or Counselling.
  2. Understanding of refugee issues, and the effects of torture on individuals, families and communities in the context of resettlement in the Hunter.
  3. Demonstrated clinical skills and experience in the use of a variety of therapeutic approaches in a multicultural context.
  4. Demonstrated effective written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  5. Knowledge and experience of community education, community development and community work.
  6. Demonstrated group work skills and experience and training skills.
  7. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team within a multicultural environment.
  8. Current NSW Driver’s Licence.

Desirable:

  1. Bi-lingual in a community language relevant to refugee communities settling in the Hunter.
  2. Experience in family and/or child therapy.
  3. Awareness of relevant service providers in the Hunter working with refugee communities and an ability to work in partnerships.
  4. Understanding and knowledge of the NSW Health System.

*This position is considered child-related employment and will require a Working with Children Background Check and a National Police Check.

As a not-for-profit Affiliated Health Organisation, STARTTS is required by law to adhere to the Public Health (COVID-19 Vaccination of Health Care Workers) Order 2021, which commenced on 26 August 2021. The Order establishes mandatory requirements for health staff and persons working in health settings to be vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine. The Order requires the first dose of a vaccine by 30 September 2021, with a second dose required by 30 November 2021. You will be required to provide a record of your COVID-19 vaccination status if successful.

Work Type: Full time, 38 hours per week. Contract up to 30 June 2023 (continuation subject to ongoing funding).

Location: Newcastle

Salary: Health Education Officer, or other relevant classification based on qualifications, experience and requirements of the role under the NSW Health Awards. A generous salary packaging scheme is also offered to reduce the taxable income and increase the take home pay.
