About the role

The Advocacy and Constituent Officer will provide high quality service for Brisbane constituents of Stephen Bates MP who are seeking assistance, specifically for constituents requiring help navigating government services. The common, particular areas of support are NDIS, Centrelink, and Immigration. This role will take a case management approach to assisting constituents with more complex matters, and include supporting people who are struggling or marginalised and need help navigating bureaucracy. This role oversees and drives the work of assisting constituents needing help from the office including by drafting emails, speaking with constituents, holding meetings, and referral of cases to relevant team members and decision-makers as necessary. There will be a focus on developing relationships with constituents and advocacy organisations to ensure that all avenues for support are explored. Experience working in a similar advocacy setting will be highly advantageous.

This position will be offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984, and employment conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2020-2023. In addition to your salary, generous employer-sponsored superannuation of 15% is offered along with ongoing training and professional development facilitated by the employment framework. This is a contract covering maternity leave, and will commence 11 January 2023 (negotiable) finishing 25 September 2023 with possibility of extension.

About you

An understanding of Australian Politics, alignment with progressive Greens values, a commitment to making positive change, strong communication and professional relationship management skills, professional integrity, and a track record as a flexible team player are essential requirements.

  • Case management and/or social work experience or background
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills
  • Experience navigating government services
  • Building and maintaining relationships with vulnerable community members, groups and stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate with influence utilising advocacy pathways

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to connect with people from vulnerable backgrounds.
