SUPRA

SUPRA is the postgraduate student union at the Usyd, run by postgrads, for postgrads. SUPRA is governed by a council of postgraduate students who are elected each year by postgrad students. We also employ professional staff to provide professional services and assist SUPRA Council.

Position Description:

The Community Building Officer (CBO) will play a pivotal role in enhancing the experiences of postgraduate students at the University of Sydney. The CBO will provide direct support to SUPRA Council and volunteers, will facilitate the delivery of community building programs and events, and help foster a vibrant and engaged postgraduate student community. This role is a professional staff role and will report directly to the Casework and Strategic Coordinators of the Postgraduate Advocacy Service at SUPRA. 

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct a comprehensive mapping of SUPRA's current community building activities and programs and planning for areas of expansion and improvement. 

CBO in collaboration with SUPRA’s Council will assist SUPRA’s Volunteer Program. This involves:

• Recruiting and screening high quality volunteers for the program
• Ensuring volunteers are inducted and trained in their roles and responsibilities while acting as SUPRA volunteers
• Supporting and directing SUPRA volunteers as they are engaged in event volunteering, including organising events
• The ongoing development and improvement of the Program.

In collaboration with SUPRA’s Council, the CBO will be responsible for SUPRA’s Social Impact Grant (SIG), including:

• The publicising of the SIG,
• The assessment of applications to the SIG,
• Supporting SUPRA mentors of successful applicants,
• Review and make suggestions for improvement to the SIG.
• Written report to support SUPRA to apply for ongoing SIG Funding

In collaboration with SUPRA Council and SUPRA staff, the CBO will participate in the planning and running of orientation and welcome events for postgraduate students at the beginning of semester 1 and 2.

In collaboration with SUPRA Council the CBO coordinate the Supervisor of The Year Awards (SOTY)

Desirable skills:

• Demonstrated experience in event organising and volunteer management
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor and motivate volunteers
• Excellent organisational and project management abilities
• Familiarity with digital communication tools and social media platforms
• Knowledge of student engagement strategies and university culture
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse communities and stakeholders
• Prior experience in a community-building or student engagement role is desirable
• Prior experience in a trade union or member-led organisation
