Switchboard Victoria is based on the lands of the Yaluk-ut Weelam clan of the Boon Wurrung peoples.

About Switchboard Victoria (Inc.) 

Switchboard Victoria is a community-based, not for profit organisation that provides peer-based, volunteer driven support services for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and gender diverse, Intersex, Queer, Asexual and more (LGBTIQA+) people and their friends, families and allies. 

Our current activities include: 

  • Phone and web counselling and referral – Switchboard is the Victorian partner in the national QLife service. QLife provides anonymous and free LGBTIQA+ peer support and referral for people in Australia wanting to talk about sexuality, identity, gender, bodies, feelings, or relationships. 
  • Community connections for older LGBTI+ people – Switchboard’s Pride in Ageing program works to tackle ageism and strengthen social inclusion and community connection for older LGBTI+* Victorians. The Out and About peer visiting program builds friendship and connection between LGBTI+ seniors living anywhere in Victoria through regular volunteer visits.  
  • Rainbow Door - is a free specialist LGBTIQA+ helpline providing information, support, and referral to all LGBTIQA+ Victorians, their friends and family. Rainbow Door supports people of all ages and identities with issues that may include suicidal thoughts, family, and intimate partner violence (including elder abuse), alcohol and other drugs, relationship issues, sexual assault, social isolation, mental health and wellbeing. 
  • Suicide prevention - research and development of suicide prevention resources and programs for LGBTIQA+ communities. 
  • QTIBPoC Programs - The QTIBPoC programs aim to build greater equity for Queer, Trans, Intersex and Bla(c)k, Indigenous and/or People of Colour and People of Faith. In consultation with key stakeholders, Switchboard’s QTIBPoC Programs will build internal capacity to meet QTIBPoC community needs and extend into targeted services.
  • Training Program – Switchboard delivers a range of training to the community and service sector organisations. Trainings offerings include LGBTIQA+ Inclusive Practice, How to Recognise and Respond to F/IPV, How to Talk About Suicide Safely, Everyday Racism in the Workplace and Peer Support Training. Staff are accredited to deliver LivingWorks programs ASIST and safeTALK.
  • Rainbow Families - Connecting and supporting LGBTIQA+ parents, carers, and their families. Supporting services to develop and deliver rainbow family-inclusive better practice across Victoria.

POSITION DETAILS

  • Title: Treasurer

  • Employment type: Volunteer
  • Time Commitment: 3 hours per week, which can be undertaken outside of business hours. Additional hours will be required prior to the end of the Financial Year, which may require some work during business hours
  • Period of Tenure: 2 years
  • Reports to: The Board Treasurer reports to the Board

Position overview

The Treasurer is responsible for the management of Switchboard’s financial responsibilities. It is the role of the Treasurer to oversee the Organisation’s finances and contribute to strategic planning with a financial lens.

Roles and responsibilities

General:

  • On being elected to the Board, undertake induction and training procedures as provided by the Board.

Governance:

  • Ensure that the Board maintains the degree of financial literacy necessary to conduct the business of the organisation
  • Advise the Board on matters of finance and accounting.
  • Advise the Board on fundraising
  • Ensure that Switchboard satisfies its legislative requirements regarding financial reporting, taxation, etc.

Planning:

  • Ensure, in partnership with the CEO and Board, the regular review and development of the Business Plan
  • Contribute to the development of the Organisation’s strategic plan, taking primary responsibility for any finance-related priorities/initiatives.
  • Liaise with Switchboard’s appointed auditors to assist in the annual audit of accounts

Meetings:

  • Report to the Board at each meeting on the financial position and performance of the organisation

  • Report to the Board at each meeting on significant variances from the approved budget

  • With the Secretary, place any necessary financial items on the Board agenda in advance of the meeting

  • Report to the Annual General Meeting on the financial situation of the organisation

  • Chair the Finance Committee and attend regular meetings with the other committee members.

Administrative & Management:

  • Carry out financial duties as assigned
  • With the finance staff team, keep the books of the organisation. It is not the responsibility of the Treasurer to process financial transactions (bookkeeping).
  • Ensure the organisation’s financial records are accurate, protected, backed up, and accessible
  • Manage the organisation’s banking / treasury function. Ensure there are sufficient cash reserves and regularly report on the Organisation’s cash position.
  • With the finance staff team, maintain the organisation’s fixed asset register

Finance:

  • Ensure the organisation’s financial control procedures are adequate and that appropriate safeguards against fraud are in place
  • Ensure that risk management strategies (including appropriate insurances) are in place
  • Collect and receive all money due to the organisation and make all payments authorised by the organisation
  • Oversee the organisation’s investment strategy and report to the Board
  • Prepare the Budget for the coming year
  • Review income and expenditure against the budget on a continuous basis

Legal:

  • Ensure the organisation’s compliance with all applicable tax arrangements

Other Duties:

  • Fulfil the requirements and responsibilities of general/all board members.

Required Skills and Attributes

  • Applicant must identify as part of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender diverse, Intersex, asexual (LGBTIQA+) community [Switchboard Victoria has an exemption under the Equal Employment]
  • Qualification in accountancy and/or finance. CA or CPA preferred but not required.
  • Experience in the management of budgets and the production of financial reports
  • Up to date knowledge of employer obligations such as superannuation, pay rates, and leave entitlements
  • Up to date knowledge of the financial obligations of not-for-profit organisations
  • Ability to communicate financial information to a range of audiences
  • Strong understanding and demonstrated capacity to support Switchboard’s commitment to anti-racism, including:
  • Commitment and capacity to support organisational development to increase organisational anti-racism capability
  • Demonstrated capacity to receive and give critical feedback in relation to race and racism
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead, support & facilitate others to build capacity to put anti-racism into practice
  • Strong understanding and demonstrated capability to promote cultural safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
