The SWSPHN Board comprises up to nine (9) Directors bringing a broad range of skills including general practice, health planning, allied health, nursing, legal, financial and corporate governance.

At each Annual General Meeting, consistent with SWSPHN Constitution, two elected Board members and one appointed Board member must retire by rotation. At the upcoming 2024 SWSPHN AGM, two elected positions will be voted on by the SWSPHN Organisational Members. Please note for this election the Board is supportive of the renomination of one retiring GP Board Member.

To complement the existing Board members, we are specifically seeking Directors who possess skills in one of more of the following:

  • Corporate expertise e.g. experience with legal or financial issues
  • Expertise in the needs of population groups in South Western Sydney experiencing inequity
  • Information Technology Strategy
  • General Practice

To succeed in this role, you will:

  • Possess sound corporate governance skills including financial acumen.
  • Be committed to supporting and enhancing primary healthcare.
  • Be an effective listener, constructive questioner and critical thinker who can apply these skills to influence and negotiate outcomes for the PHN and our communities.
  • Be able to think strategically, including identify and critically assess opportunities and threats; develop effective strategies consistent with SWSPHN objectives and relevant national policies and priorities.

The role will require you to work with the Board and relevant Board committees, oversee clinical, financial and business risk, and to support the development and implementation of company strategy. The Board routinely meets bimonthly, on the last Thursday of the month between 2-5pm.

In addition, Directors are expected to participate in Board committees, an annual strategic workshop, requisite training plus stakeholder engagement activities from time to time. Meetings may be either face to face at our Campbelltown office or via Zoom.

About South Western Sydney Primary Health Network (SWSPHN)

SWSPHN covers seven (7) Local Government Areas, including Bankstown, Fairfield, Liverpool, Campbelltown, Camden, Wollondilly and Wingecarribee. As at July 2023 the estimated population is 1.1 million people.

The organisation is primarily grant funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care (DoHAC) to address seven (7) national priority areas in our region: Mental Health; Aboriginal Health; Aged Care; Drug Treatment Services; Digital Health; Population Health; and Workforce. These seven (7) priority areas are embedded in the strategic and activity work plans of the SWSPHN.

The SWSPHN provides leadership and coordination across the key priority areas in collaboration with stakeholders including:

  • The South Western Sydney Local Health District & NSW Ministry of Health
  • DoHAC
  • Peak industry bodies
  • Universities, research and training organisations
  • Primary health care providers including general practice
  • Community organisations and businesses
  • Media

The SWSPHN, is also a commissioning organisation and supports and advances the central role of General Practice in primary health care. It provides a critical interface between primary, secondary and community care, pursuing an integrated health system that delivers continuity of care which is equitable, patient centred, closer to the home and increases health literacy.

The SWSPHN co-designs, commissions and implements strategies aiming to:

  • Encourage new models of care that reduce fragmentation;
  • Support General Practice as the cornerstone for integrated primary care;
  • Build information and communications technology (ICT) capacity within the region as an enabler for quality and integration;
  • Enhance community involvement in health care design and delivery through localised, place-based strategies.
